“Ordinary is extraordinary!” Soen—Zen Tradition
If there is only one… then consciousness is all and everything. In this understanding…
the extraordinary is the ordinary. There is nothing that is not consciousness.
In the Svachandra Tantra of Hinduism… it is said: “Na Shaivam Vidyate Qua Chit.”
It means… nothing exists that is not consciousness. Wherever you look… whatever you see… there
is only one consciousness. All else is illusion.
If we are wakeful… we are aware of consciousness as the most ordinary of forms and expressions.
The air that we breathe… the flowers that we smell… the animals we love… and all
the people of this planet… are but forms of the same consciousness. Again… this is
the extraordinary in the ordinary.
This week… let us endeavor to be aware of the extraordinary consciousness within the
ordinary experiences of everyday life. Let us practice wakefulness… of the one in the
many… the ordinary that is extraordinary. Let us experience that indeed there is only
one.
