VO: In today’s rapidly changing world, 21st century skills like science, technology,
engineering and mathematics are more important than ever.
They help students make sense of information to solve complex challenges.
But until now there’s been a gap in our ability to measure students’ ability
to apply technology and engineering skills in real-world situations.
That changed with the introduction of the Technology and Engineering Literacy assessment,
or TEL, from the National Assessment of Educational Progress,
also known as NAEP.
NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment
of what America’s students know and can do.
The NAEP Technology and Engineering Literacy assessment isn’t a typical paper and pencil assessment.
This computer-based assessment measures student understanding by having students evaluate
and apply technological principles to real-world challenges.
It uses the latest available technologies to present students with interactive
scenario-based tasks to gauge what they know and can do.
DR. ALAN FRIEDMAN - (FORMER) NAGB BOARD MEMBER: Technology and engineering
are about designing things to make our lives easier, richer, healthier and safer…
Every day of their lives today’s students will have to make decisions
about how best to use what technology and engineering have to offer.
VO: The data from this assessment will bring us one step closer
to understanding how best to approach 21st century subjects for future generations.
