People Talking
Oh my gosh, this is the war room.
5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 46 people so far
That's great. And here's your area's.
This is, like I said, the war room.
Well you got to have a plan. That's right.
In this years weed pull,
the plan was to dispatch volunteers all over campus,
to route out three invasive plants.
Bird vetch, Canadian Thistle, and nettles,
This is bird vetch, this is the worst.
This one is imported from out in the valley,
and it has spread to invasive weed,
and in my opinion, I think it comes from vehicles,
because it's mostly around the roadways.
So that's a nasty one.
You'll see it blooming all along the Seward highway.
And tell me about nettles, what are they?
Nettles, if you touch it, it has asorbic acid,
it has these little hairs and it burns.
People use it, this is a native plant.
People cook this and eat it.
Now this one is really bad. Canadian Thistle.
We got this in, im not sure,
but a lot of these come in on imported plants material.
So UAA workers and volunteers attack with a vengence.
You've got to be equipped properly to weed properly.
What's your weapon of choice?
What did Mal call this hook he gave us? Cobra.
I've gotta drive by here everyday so im going to make a difference.
Hey there.
Hi.
Hows it going?
Oh, lot's of weeds.
yeah, no shortage of material.
Nope, no shortage of material. Good honest work.
Look at your pile of weeds. You've got quite a few.
If it's not a bush or a tree, I pull it.
[laughing] It's your philosophy.
Sort 'em out later.
Landscaping horticulture supervisor Pat Leary
even had workers up on the roofs.
Birds come along, they eat the mountain ash seeds
they come over there and elminate them on the tops of roofs or in the woods
then they start growing.
The types of roofs we have are a membrane with a paver
and when it rains its like a hyperponic garden.
So if they let them grow they'll penetrate the roof
and then in the wintertime it leaks.
The next day Pat Leary sent out a big thank you.
47 weed warriors filled 54 bags
with 895 pounds of weeds.
Some people just come to work to do their job,
but its really about a community here.
