Hi, this is Bob from Classic Toy Trains magazine.
Today we're going to take a look at the Williams
by Bachmann Norfolk Southern New York Central
Heritage locomotive that we review in the May 2014 issue of Classic Toy Trains
magazine. This is a commemorative, a salute,
to the Norfolk Southern's program where they've repainted a number of locomotives into
Heritage schemes reflecting the railroads of which the Norfolk Southern now
has as subsidiary components. This one is a New York Central version
which is, of course, my favorite railroad. Also, let me add, this is an SD90
whereas in the prototype world they used an SD70 body for the locomotives.
Just so you're aware this is a slightly different but very similar locomotive.
So let's look at some details. Now, the first thing you may notice is that
the locomotive has stamped steel set of handrails. I personnally find this pretty handy.
Because you can just stick your fingers through it
and you can carry the locomotive around. And how many locomotives are there on the
market where if you try that they're going to be falling all over the place and disaster
will ensure. So you have to note that.
The body style is very similar to the SD70. It's got all the standard features. Just compressed
a little bit in detail. the tooling is very nice. Very deep etchings for the doors, the
handles, the latches, the screens. The nose has some nice add-on detail points.
It's got add-on grab irons and sand filler caps.
Really like the sort of all-weather windows on the side of the cab.
it's got sort of a humpback radiator overhang. And a nice, square, rear end of the locomotive.
Of course the New York Cental lightning stripe is very well executed. and it has builder's
plates and of course yellow safety appliances on the end and the white accents on the steps.
Looks nice. How does it run? Let's take a look at that.
The Williams by Bachmann Norfolk Southern Heritage Series locomotives are currently
available in New York Central, which you see here, Jersey Central, the Erie, and the Lackawanna.
So get down to your Williams by Bachmann retailer and check it out.
