Hi, I'm Melissa and I'm On The Beat for you,
today at A MAZE Indie Connect
where you can try out games,
someone gets an award, there are parties,
concerts and workshops and a conference,
how cool is that? Let's have a look.
Indie games are not geared towards a market.
They're about creativity, experiments.
They're about innovation and freshness.
It's a single-player experience.
I go into the bunker on my own for 30 minutes
and can play the story of the place.
It happens via augmented reality.
We developed an app.
Wow, that's crazy.
Let me explain this again.
This is my iPhone which I point
to the QR code on the ground.
And in reality you see nothing.
There's nothing there. But there is something
on my iPhone. It's spooky.
You can't hear it, but I can hear creepy music.
It's about crossing borders and transcendence.
You killed me.
I was the first one.
I am in contradiction to all laws of nature.
This may be a cliché,
but there are hardly any girls here.
And there seems to be
only one female game developer here.
A MAZE was founded in 2008.
It was our aim to combine games and art,
particularly media art. We were linked
with Club Transmediale and Transmediale.
Then I uncoupled from them and said,
I'll do Indie Connect
which still has an arty character
and the award places importance on art.
We make sure there is a certain level of quality.
We want to make a difference.
The location is really wicked.
Everything's full of art and funny people.
I was expecting cooler T-shirts.
It's more like an interactive music installation.
It's not really about winning a game.
You can either play it like an instrument or...
The rays continue on the screen.
When you touch a ray, a sound is produced
and the ray parts and continues as two.
You can try to hit those objects
to play additional sounds.
This is crazy.
Very much like Star Trek. Wicked.
I designed it in a way that no matter
what you play, it always sounds pretty.
I was just thinking that!
What inspired you here?
Laser harps as instruments have been around
since, I don't know, the '80s or something.
Jean-Michel Jarre.
Some cost 200,000 Euros.
I thought they looked fantastic
and I wanted to build one,
but I don't have 200,000 Euros.
So I kept experimenting with lasers from China.
They're ordinary laser pointers
for six Euros a piece.
WATCH OUT ARCADE
Watch out, Arcade!
I'm from Berlin.
Of course I'll take Badass vs Hipsters.
You are ***
and have to destroy other ***
so you're the first to hit the egg. Yes.
I think I'm in the uterus now
and have to defend myself against hipster cells.
If you remember Arcade games,
you always had to punch the keys a lot.
Not a lot of strategy there.
This is similar.
There are lots of very cool ideas.
The Indie community keeps amazing me.
Standards are cast off
and people do stuff they've never seen before,
not the umteenth ego shooter.
They take a different direction. I like it a lot.
This is our first attempt.
Here you can see the graphics
and your opponents who'll shoot you
if you're not careful.
So I can't shoot?
No, you're a pacifist. Oh, one of them got me.
I've been playing a lot,
but always against developers,
so I keep losing all the time.
The guys from Golden Tricycle are so kind
as to give a way a cool T-shirt of Clark.
It has a sweet little robot on the front.
If you want to win this, write a comment
and tell us what I am today.
Have a little think.
Here's a tip: It would be shocking
if no-one gets this.
Don't disappoint me!
My eyes are square from playing lots of games.
It's been a great day, I met tons of fun people.
Thanks for watching.
What's your favourite game?
Write us a comment, I really want to know.
See you next time.
