Hi, I'm Diokno Pasilan, this is Memory House which is part of the show Dialogues With Landscape
at UWA. The Memory House is coming from the 'bayanihan'
word. The bayanihan word means for Filipino people to help each other. But also the bayanihan
word is for the house, moving it to a different place.
This Memory House, the idea is to try and recall my history. Back in the Philippines
I was working in the remote village in the island where I used to live. I organised for
the community to be involved in a beautification of their houses for a local festival. And
that, I have been doing for three years. I gather all these different photographs of
houses. And these photographs, they will be projected on the house at night, which as
you can see, the images transforms the house. I've brought this project to the Filipino
community in Perth, for them to help me. I've had workshops with them for two consecutive
weeks. I've gone to their club, the Filipino Australian Club in Perth.
I like to make art that everybody can be involved in. Here, in this particular project, I involved
music – the Gong Band. I used to play with the Gong Band, we play traditional instruments. I thought,
it's perfect to use instruments to attract the community. Not only Filipino, but all
the community that's around. This project I think symbolises this, that's
why I called it Memory. It's based on the experiences I've had, and this experience
I would like to bring it to other communities. The community here in UWA, the different communities
that migrate to Australia. That's why I involve the music, the different kinds of practice.
That's how it's supposed to be for me, in terms of community art. It's nice to put in
some work that enables everybody to come together and just really experience being there, to
talk about and share your experience.
