Dr Gabbe Video Blog Week of May 24, 2010
Change is all around us and one of the changes you may be thinking about is the change that
healthcare reform will bring and what the Medical Center is doing to prepare for the
impact of the legislation.
Today I want to take a few minutes to tell you a little bit about the changes we are
expecting and preparing for here at the Medical Center.
First, it is important to note that the reform takes effect over the next four years.
There’s good news! It turns out that most of the things we thought were important and
the right thing to do -- things like prevention and wellness -- are the same things that those
who support healthcare reform also think are important.
Although a great deal of ground work has already been laid, we are gathering resources and
advice to further study the issue, including conducting a consultant-led readiness review
that will determine how well we’re prepared we are in specific areas identified by the
legislation.
Many of the provisions of the new healthcare reform legislation, including Primary Care
Medical Homes, the creation of Healthcare Innovation Zones and taking a Patient-Centric
Approach match up well with the Medical Center’s vision for personalized healthcare and P4
medicine. This means that the Medical Center is well positioned to take a leadership role
in helping to bring about true change that will make healthcare not only more accessible
and affordable for more people, but also safer and more effective, as it will be focused
on individual patients and the creation of a healthcare system that addresses all their
needs.
In the foreseeable future, the most immediate effect of healthcare reform will be to make
care available to patients who are currently uninsured. We are taking steps now to be certain
we will have the capacity and resources necessary to care for these new patients who, by 2014,
will be seeking primary care -- some for the first time in their lives.
In June, we’ll be holding a series of town meetings for all faculty and staff about how
OSU Medical Center is preparing for all the changes health care reform will bring. Please
take a few minutes today to share your questions or ideas for these meetings in the comment
section of this blog and look for more information on times and dates for meetings in the coming
weeks on OneSource.
And please save the date for our ProjectONE groundbreaking on June 18 from 2-4 pm. You’ll
learn more about this in the coming weeks but this is a milestone event that you won’t
want to miss.
And, have a great week.
