Hey, I'm Rachael and I'm here to tell you about a part of the University Studies curriculum.
University Studies curriculum is comprised of various components. It gives you a comprehensive
university experience, and prepares you for study in your major. There are three things
to remember about University Studies before we begin.
First, don't take any courses for which you have college credits or courses in which you
have taken the AP or IB exams. Second, make sure you send in your official transcripts
and scores to UNCW directly from the college or College Board. Third, University Studies
is a requirement to graduate, but keep in mind you will have four years to complete
all the requirements. We're going to quickly go through a check sheet to give you some
ideas for courses in which you can register. Since we are only giving an overview, be sure
to ask your academic advisor any specific questions at your advising session during
Orientation.
Print the link below this video to follow along with the University Studies checklist.
Let't think of University Studies as a menu. Let's begin by looking at the categories to
see how many hours of courses you need for that particular category. For example, the
First Year Seminar category requires three hours, whereas the Composition category is
three to six hours dependent on placement. The first category to address is Composition.
(Short Jingle) This is your college level English course. Your SAT verbal score determines
the class you need. If you score 610 or higher on the SAT verbal or 28 or higher on the ACT,
you may take English 103. Otherwise English 100 or 101 is appropriate. Most students place
into English 100 or 101.
After Composition, you will need a Lifetime Wellness Category. (Short Jingle) PED 101
is your physical activity and wellness class. There is a lecture and a lab component for
this course and we offer activities like weightlifting, yoga or circuit training. Remember, college
is about new experiences so try a new sport or activity you've never tried before.
Now for the Mathematics and Statistics category (Short Jingle) Here, students are required
to take three hours to fulfill the math requirement dependent on your major. You will be unable
to sign up for a math course during Early Registration because you will be taking a
Math Placement Exam during your Orientation and Advising Session.
Next, Foreign Language. (Short Jingle) These courses depend on what courses you want to
take. If you want to take the same language you studied in high school, you will need
to take the Foreign Language Placement Exam. The link for the Placement Test is below.
It takes the system over one day to update your score so please plan accordingly. If
you want to start a new language, then you should select the language at the 101 level
and contact your advisor for the needed permissions.
First Year Seminar is a required three-hour course for all incoming students. (Short Jingle)
This course must be one of the first courses you add to your schedule and needs to be taken
in your first semester. First Year Seminar or UNI 101 is a 25 student class that supports
new students as they integrate into the UNCW college experience. You can take First Year
Seminar linked with another course in University Studies to complete two academic requirements.
The classmates in your First Year Seminar will also be in your University Studies course,
which gives you the opportunity to make new friends and create study groups.
(Short Jingle) The Aesthetic, Interpretive, and Literary Perspective Category includes
an assortment of courses and subjects such as Literature, Music, Theater, Film Studies
and even Art History. Students must take at least six hours in two different disciplines
such as Art History and Literature. Next is the Historical and Philosophical Perspective
Category (Short Jingle).
Students must take six hours in this category and don't forget the courses must be from
two different disciplines such as History or Philosophy and Religion. Now the Scientific
Approaches to the Natural World Category. (Short Jingle) This requires at least 7 hours
of coursework. This includes one lab science and one non-lab science. Options range from
traditional science courses like Biology or Chemistry to courses called Natural Disasters
or Environmental Studies. Once again, the courses must be from two different subject
areas.
(Warning alarm) All Pre-Health Science majors such as Biology and Chemistry and Nursing
students should see the special note on this webpage regarding what sciences to sign up
for. The Understanding Human Institutions and Behaviors Category (Short Jingle) The
Understanding Human Institutions and Behaviors Category requires six hours of coursework
in two different disciplines. You must take two different subjects such as Economics and
Political Science. The Living in our Diverse Nation and the Living in a Global Society
category requires one three-hour course for each.
Remember you will take University Studies courses over your four years at UNCW, so you
will not complete all these requirements in your first year. Don' t forget you can watch
this video again and again if you missed information or if you need further information. (Music)
