My father has always work with technology
I think for Brown & Root for 28 years I believe so for a long, long time
He actually went to University of Houston in high school
when he was working at Ford during the day.
When they first introduced Com Science, he was one of the earliest people
So, we always had computers around the house and because they were my dads
if i broke it I had to fix it before he got home or I would get in trouble.
So i learn a lot about fixing computers.
WordPress is basically a simple way to publish online.
You can run a blog or your entire website using the software
and the cool thing about it is that the software is a community project.
So you don't have to pay anyone to license it.
It is kind of like the Wikipedia
where anyone can use it and anyone can edit it and improve it.
Although that is sort of the basic software it has a broader mission.
Our mission is to democratize publishing.
Make it so anyone anywhere in the world can have a voice online
and that is what we work on everyday.
So far there have been i think 24 million WordPress blogs created
and many, many tens of thousands edited everyday.
It was kind of funny because I guess I was here at UH when WordPress first started
We actually had no users
and so I ended up setting blogs for all of my friends
just so we could get the first 5 to 10 users
but it didn't really feel like work either
it was just something I really enjoyed doing.
I was doing it for its intrinsic entertainment value.
The fact that it ended up being useful for many other people
has been a very pleasant surprise
I love, love, love Houston.
I have been all over the world now and I keep coming back here.
and I think one of the things I appreciated most about UH was just the accessibility.
It was a fantastic educational institution right in my hometown and
that provided me an opportunity to scholarships and everything to
be able to financially go to school and not have to work a day job like my dad did.
Once i was here there were just a few professors I had that
just blew me away with there thoughtfulness
I had one professor in political science, his name was Ross Lence
Who I was a big fan and really inspired me to do
a lot of reading of the classics which i haven't really studied before.
And it was kinda of cool because I think when you see
someone that is really passionate about something
no matter what the topic is, it is infectious.
So i feel like their passion for
history, political science, philosophy, philosophy of language and
all those courses I took that I really enjoyed
inspired my passion for the web and publishing
And all the things that I eventually have ended up
devoting the past 7 or 8 years of my life to and hopefully many decades more.
My name is Matt Mullenweg and I am the pride.
