Hello, I'm Governor Martin O'malley and I want to welcome you to
the African-American heritage festival.
This is one of the largest festivals of its type anywhere on the east coast.
Over half a million people
throughout our region visit the festival each year
making at not only the rich celebration of culture and heritage
but also a big economic engine that brings visitors in throughout our state and our region
to come to Maryland.
This festival is your chance to have fun with your entire family,
to learn to celebrate the significant contributions of African-Americans,
to the cultural fabric of our state.
Many years ago the National Geographic Magazine described Maryland
as America in miniature,
represented in our rich diversity and our culture.
Baltimore is home to: Polish, Greek, Latino Caribbean, Nigerian, Native American, Ukrainian
Korean, and Russian festivals,
and at each one of these gatherings we learn about to celebrate the contributions of our
fellow citizens and their particular heritage of culture.
We remain committed to that tradition
even during these tough times.
While you are here, I encourage you to visit the empowerment village
where you learn about many of the programs and support systems available
to help families, small businesses, and communities
weather these difficult times
including: small business assistance,
foreclosure prevention,
financial counseling,
health and wellness initiatives, and many others.
The rich history of African-Americans in Maryland
reminds us that together
united in our belief in the dignity of every individual,
we can build on our strengths.
We can make sure that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths
and we can make a positive difference in the lives of our neighbors
and our kids.
From my family to yours, I hope you enjoy the African-American heritage festival.
Thanks a lot for coming.
