This is what I have
This is what I have: dyslexia
Why did you let it ...
...
Why did you let it ... ... overgrow so much?
Clear that ... that road again
cut it open; then those creatures who sssssssssh...
shun daylight will flee.
I especially remember he was very enthusiastic about starting first grade in elementary school.
After two weeks we already noticed he had problems with reading.
It all seemed to go so well at first but soon it turned out to be a nightmare.
Imagine someone asking : "Ah, you're in first grade? So you can read, right?"
That's the first thing they ask.
It's very confronting if you cannot read after all those weeks of practice, not even the simplest words.
At first I… it… everything was going so slow and I always had to work much harder
it felt like...euhm…yea…it doesn't…yea... you are like pffff, I really don't feel like…
I don't think it's fair they have to work harder than me
and I'm always behind my desk for so long. I just have enough of it.
that's part of the first year's curriculum.
But then they took a written test, so he only scored two out of ten…
I remember the huge disappointment when he got home
We thought 'this is something he can manage' but instead he got judged on his dyslexia again.
I notice that some people think I'm dumb and not capable
but this is really not the case… It's nothing like that at all.
(horseback riding) Well done Louis, put him forth for a moment...
Stien, try to count those steps... legs, legs, legs....good... legs Louis, legs
After my first year in elementary school, I transferred to the Eureka School…
This is a school for people with dyslexia or dyscalculia. They are supported and learn how to use the computer.
After attending this school for two years and finishing third grade
I started fourth grade in a mainstream school again.
Eureka's philosophy is to catch up with peers, study the current year's curriculum
and build up a head start.
After his first year in elementary school we were lucky to get him enrolled
in the Eureka School where he made rapid progress
Louis was also able to build his self-esteem and he started to feel happy again.
Eureka is a rather expensive school
although you can cut down on things, it's still not democratic.
That's something I regret, not every child gets the same opportunities.
Some pupils feel… well yea,… it's not fair I sometimes get extra help.
At first it was very difficult.
All those practical consequences like putting everything on a memory stick,
making sure documents are ready in advance.
Sometimes tests have to be announced two weeks ahead...
In the beginning it's not easy.
At first it didn't work out well for my French teacher.
Because she didn't know how to deal with the laptop.
The program reads out the highlighted sentence, or whatever you want it to read.
If we get an assignment and we interpret it wrong, we will not achieve our goal.
If the assignment is read out , we know exactly what is expected.
After a while it didn't even occur to me that Louis was working on a laptop
or that he was going a little bit slower. Now it's all obvious. It has become natural.
I believe that dyslexia is not an illness and there’s no need to be ashamed.
I don't u…use it if… I don't abuse it.
I... will have this for the rest of my life.
He is brave, he works hard and that's his strength.
That's why I have confidence in him.
I see his perseverance and I believe it will pay off.
He never gives up...
