Flea markets are a great place
to turn a pocketful of change into gold.
On today's "Flea Market Flip,"
we have two teams with very different styles.
First, our former Wall Streeters...
Time to get dirty and get busy.
Roll your sleeves up. It's gonna be fun.
...taking on two eclectic artists.
We don't mind getting dirty,
and they look like they probably have never gotten dirty.
They'll all bring their A-game
as they dig for hidden treasure...
KATIE: These are totally cool.
...that they'll fix up...
That's something you don't see every day.
No, I don't think you'll see it again.
SPENCER: ...and then flip.
PELS: Thank you very much.
The team that makes the biggest profit
selling their refurbished finds wins $5,000.
And the treasure hunt is on.

Hey everybody, I'm Lara Spencer, and this is "Flea Market Flip."
It's a great day here at the Elephant's Trunk Flea Market
in New Milford, Connecticut.
We've got two teams who are not only creative,
they are also very competitive
as they try to turn castoffs into cold, hard cash.
We love money.
We're totally motivated.
Our first team is a pair of Wall Street sharks,
Katie and Pels, who show no mercy
when it comes to finding, fixing, and flipping.
We're here to play, and we're gonna win.
They're taking on good friends Chandi and Kim.
We have a million options.
The problem is, almost, we have too many options.
These are two artists who use flea market finds
to achieve incredible design.
We're gonna be able to see any piece of junk
and know that we could turn it into something nice.
We're giving each team a list of three projects
we call our "flip list,"
along with a $500 budget
and only one hour to find their three projects.
Yeah, let's go down here.
So, today, we are looking for three things.
On your flip list -- Everybody have their flip list?
Yes.
I love your projects.
It doesn't need to be a light right now
to turn into a light.
Get creative -- Use your imagination.
We want to combine form and function here.
Use your imagination.
"Double Duty" is one of my favorites
because I love to see
what you guys bring to the table.
And finally...
Get inspired by retro-futuristic.
Think 19th Century, industrial,
and make it very now and hip,
and you will make a lot of money on it.
Yes.
It's true.
Does that come from your Wall Street experience,
that you're just sharks out there?
Never take the first price.
Never take the first price -- Good advice.
Chandi and Kim, how about you?
What's your philosophy at flea markets?
We're sort of the opposite.
We're poor so we never pay a lot for anything.
We're comfortable.
We're going toe-to-toe here today on "Flea Market Flip."
You must complete these three projects.
You have one hour to shop, so go! Do it.
I might join you.
All right, so... Let's go this way.
The artist in me
The nudes?
Could we do something with that?
All right.
Look for things that you can turn into a fixture.
You could turn those into table lamps.
PELS: Those could be cool.
That's my friend, Robert.
What do you want for those two tall vases?
$40.
How low could you go?
PELS: $35. Oh, boy.
$32, she says.
$33. That's my final offer.
$33.
KATIE: We have some ideas for the shades.
Right -- We'll use, probably, some paper drums.
Either simple black or white paper drums
to really silhouette them
and give them a nice, clean, modern look.
You fill it up with beer, make great...
Oh, yeah. [ Chuckles ]
What about this for lighting?
You know, like if it was hanging from a ceiling like that.
And then,
we would have to make cages for the outside.
How low could we get if we got them both?
How about $45 for the pair of them?
Would you take $40?
Oh, great!
We could turn it into a hanging --
like, a two -- like a chandelier with two parts.
I think any kind of --
Can we check these?
They're $15 each or two for $25.
Would you take $20 for both of them?
That is fair.
Okay. Thank you.
Thank you.
Really all we're gonna have to do is rewire them
and, like, you know, make something to --
you know, just a mounting element.
I think this is a no-brainer. It could be a bar.
PELS: Could be a "Double Duty" thing.
Right.
It used to be a trunk and then make it a bar.
Do you want to do that?
What are you asking for the trunk?
I'd like $75.
Hmm...
$65 cash.
Okay.
Okay, great.
Thank you very much.
KATIE: The trunk is awesome.
It opens up and it's a substantial piece,
Yeah.
"Double Duty" check.
Moving forward --
We're doing really great on time, so that's good.
I feel like the easiest thing to do for dual duty
is just to have, you know,
some kind of storage with a tabletop.
What about these large cutting boards --
if these were a tabletop?
If we were to take something like this,
and put it on top of something like this,
and, like, attach that to the top,
it would be decorative,
and storage, and a cutting board.
We were wondering what our price situation is here.
Yeah, what are we looking at?
Comes to about -- comes to about $78.
How low could you go? Could you do it for $50?
Uh, no.
But maybe $65?
$60?
We'll take it. Thank you so much.
Just, one, two, three -- easy. Boom, done.
We can steampunk up anything, I feel like,
Right.
But I want it to all work.
So we'll see.
Their eyes are gonna go past every piece of junk
that probably isn't worth money.
That's what I think.
PELS: Oh, those are great.
What's the story with these?
Far as we know, they're off of an airplane,
but I don't know what kind.
We're asking $150.
Would you do $90 for the two?
We own them? Beautiful.
KATIE: For "Steampunk," we got a really cool...
PELS: Airplane parts.
Super cool.
Neat, what are you gonna do with them?
If you put, like, a nice, thick, beveled glass on top,
it would be a great coffee table, like --
All right. So maybe you can even find the glass here.
What's the asking price?
I'm starting at $125.
That's for the whole table.
If we took the glass off your hands,
can we do it for $40?
How about 50 bucks? Give you the top.
Just do it.
PELS: $50. Done. Sold. Thank you very much.
I'm getting a little worried about the "Steampunk,"
Yeah.
And "Steampunk," I think that it's really just gonna be
whatever we find.
Oh, oh, oh -- I see something over here, though.
CHANDI: Well, it's a speaker.
We could take that out,
we could put something on the inside.
Can you tell me how much that little speaker thing is?
That old speaker?
Any chance you'd take $15?
$15? Okay, great.
I feel like we need something to add to it.
Which jewelry box?
Steampunk jewelry box?
Want the box? I can sell you the box.
What do you think, $5?
Yeah. All right. Thank you.
KIM: $5 for that jewelry box.
Would these be really nice on our steampunk thing?
They would be really sweet. How much is this?
Would you take $5?
$6?
$10.
Yeah.
Guy's a hard sell.
He's very firm.
I cannot wait.
Okay. Okay.
So excited to get to work.
I can't wait to see you use power tools.
Oh, yeah.
I'm guessing that we spent
less than that guy's sweater costs.
Welcome back to "Flea Market Flip."
It is hot and it is stressful here in the workshop
as our teams try to finish their three projects in one day.
We've got one sanding block.
I guess I'll just stand here.
Chandi and Kim have big plans for their pieces.
They want to unite this wooden cutting board,
a bench, and shelving
to form one kitchen island.
They want to combine an antique speaker,
a jewelry box, and antlers
to create a steampunk masterpiece.
And they hope to merge these wire baskets and factory lamps
to make some industrial lighting fixtures.
Any professionals who can drill glass?
SPENCER: Katie and Pels are gonna need all the help they can get
as they try to turn these glass vases
into a pair of chic lamps without breaking them.
They hope to transform this vintage steamer trunk
into a chic mini-bar.
And they envision a one-of-a-kind coffee table
made out of a set of airplane wheel covers
and a piece of glass.
We basically have all these deedly-bobs.
We've given each team an additional $100
to spend on materials
to get their projects off the ground.
And since time is not exactly on their side
with just one day to get it all done,
they'll have our trusty team of master craftsmen to rely on.
Oh, yeah.
Here we have our "Steampunk" project.
We've got the airplane wheel covers.
We came up with a piece of conduit
off a construction job
that we thought about using as, like, an axle...
...and with wheels that lifted this up a little bit.
A plan is starting to come together.
We did not.
KATIE: Right.
What's that?
Original Cessna 120, 140, or 170 aluminum wheel pants.
Yep.
Yours have the paint on them,
Me too.
Ooh.
Look how much for the buy it now price.
You think you might've done well?
We did.
We're realistically not gonna ask for that
at a flea market, but --
But either one of those is a good indicator for us.
I'm pretty sure they're gonna put the top on,
it's just gonna go, pbht!
That's something you don't see every day.
No, I don't think you'll see it again.
You bought the jewelry box, you bought the speaker,
Bought the antlers.
And the antlers are gonna go on top, right?
We have all these other sort of things
that go with the antlers, like these things --
What's the end result here?
I mean, it looks like a big mess right now,
but it's gonna be fantastic.
Yeah.
Like a beautiful sculpture with a secret inside
for your jewelry.
I can't wait till the secret is revealed.
[ Chuckles ]
I really want to cover this myself.
You don't have to. I can.
Why?
I'm compelled to.
Chandi will cut everything perfectly straight
I'm precise.
I'm like the pencil pusher of this operation.
Yeah, I just go in there and --
blah, blah, blah, blah -- and it's done.
Look at this. Gorgeous.
CHANDI: I love this.
For our double-duty project,
we are going to turn a steam trunk into a mini-bar.
How about the exterior finish.
We're leaving it. The patina's awesome.
We love the patina of the outside.
Okay.
So first, I think what we're gonna do
is get rid of some of the drawers.
We're gonna paint it -- Paint the interior orange,
and we're also gonna put mirror on the back.
Yes.
We'll do some corks on the back of one of the walls
in between the shelves, you know, in a pattern.
I think it will look nice.
And we'll hang some wine glasses
from some wine racks inside.
I do. I think it looks great.
Mm-hmm. Right.
Want to actually put a back on this bottom piece
to actually make it more stable so it's more solid.
So once everything's on there, it's pretty sturdy.
I think this is gonna be great.
We want to try to marry the woods.
What if we stain this a little bit darker
to match that?
I would say I'm most curious to see what happens
with their wood stand and box and cutting board piece.
I can't really imagine
what they're gonna construct out of that.
Sweet.
It looks beautiful.
I love the wood.
So, for our lighting project...
Lara guided us towards these.
These vases, which have sort of a cool Murano look.
We're gonna turn them into
a pair of bedside or table lamps.
We got some Lucite blocks
to create a base to give it some stability,
and then the shade will go on top.
And I think it'll be a good look.
We're gonna drill the bottom of the vases.
Which is tricky.
Yeah
You only get one shot.
Little bit.
All right. There we go. We're done.
You're welcome.
Let's do it again.
Oh.
All right.
Excellent.
Now I got to put these things together.
[ Laughs ]
I love how the light is reflected down it within here.
They have a sort of glamour to them.
They look like something that could fit
in a very fashionable environment.
KATIE: Oh, they're phenomenal.
Yeah.
We've got two vintage lights...
and two steel baskets.
We have a plan for basically hanging this in there,
and what we wanted to do is basically
just sort of wire this around, and, like, attach it.
If we were to go that way, it would be straight.
I mean, it doesn't look super neat.
It doesn't look neat.
You know, we can cut this off,
and do it a different way, too.
We could do, like, a piece of wire
that's, like, bent in a "U" from either side.
Two pieces of wire, though,
is gonna look, like, really jury-rigged.
Yours is gonna look like tic-tac-toe,
and mine is going to look like two elegant crescents.
[ Laughs ] All right.
KIM: Chandi needs to have everything measured and perfect,
and some things do need to be measured and perfect,
you know, but sometimes, things just need to get done.
[ Sighs ]
So, you're unhappy because it's not hanging straight.
I'm unhappy because it's not centered,
and it's not hanging straight,
and I don't think that with just two sides
it's gonna hang straight.
I think that you need to have at least three anchors.
This is what I did. You don't like it.
I don't know how to make it straight.
All you have to do is kind of bend and adjust it.
People are not gonna come and buy something
they have to bend and adjust every time they hang it.
It's wire. You bend it.
You level it when it's in place.
I mean, there's tension --
There's adjustment that can be made to it.
It's crooked.
Okay, whatever.
Okay.
SPENCER: Welcome to New York's Long Island City Flea,
where our teams are hoping the rain holds off
as they get their pieces set up to sell.
That looks pretty good.
Looks beyond pretty good -- It's awesome.
But there's good news for Chandi and Kim
as they finally get their crooked lighting situation
Yay! Success!
Both teams are competing for the same customers.
Over -- No. [ Laughs ]
And in the end, the team that makes the bigger profit
will take home $5,000.
We are so confident we're gonna win
that we can't even explain it.
We don't even need to say it.
We feel good. We feel good.
We just need people to walk in the gate.
Let's zhuzh it, like, and cheat the corner, maybe,
so that people can catch it.
'Cause look, all of a sudden,
I'm seeing all this color in here.
I know. I know.
I love moving things around as the day goes on.
I always do that -- I just think
you just never know what's gonna catch someone's eye.
Give people a fresh look.
This is really the moment of truth.
You have one day to sell all three of your projects.
The team that makes the bigger profit
takes home $5,000, all right?
So let's flip already!
It's awesome, right?
That's exactly right.
KIM: This is for your kitchen.
It has a lot of storage.
They were vases -- Murano glass vases.
PELS: They're vases. These are original.
That's perfect.
I would probably do $150.
Will you take $100?
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Honestly, they're kind of uneven,
so I was a little surprised they sold their lamps.
Well, you won't find anything exactly like this.
No, I know -- It would be something --
I've seen these.
Okay, what's the best deal you're gonna give me on this?
CHANDI: We were gonna start at $325.
You willing to take $250 for them?
I think we should take it.
I do.
That's like a $200 profit on this.
All right. We're gonna take it.
All right.
Sold.
PELS: So, what do you think of this steamer trunk?
Oh, I love it.
Right.
You can pull it into the middle of the room
if you're having a party.
And it does open all the way out?
All the way -- flush against the wall. No problem.
Yep.
All right.
Does the bourbon come with it?
Unfortunately I don't have a liquor license,
so I can't sell you the bourbon.
Well, hopefully, it'll find a good home with you guys.
WOMAN: Yeah, I love it.
I think it'll look great in our apartment.
I'll take it. Yeah.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
Thanks again.
It was good.
Full ask.
Does anybody have an umbrella I can buy?
[ Laughs ]
Hi.
Anybody have an umbrella?
These things sell for upwards of $3,000 on eBay.
We're not even starting there.
You know, we certainly would entertain,
you know, an offer.
What's your range?
Would you be able to come up to $500?
No way you could do $500?
All right.
Thank you. Thanks again.
Our bed is made. We've sold our items.
They've got two to go.
You know, we're just gonna wait
and see what happens.
We're making deals.
This was an old speaker that was just this with,
like, kind of a ratty, old fabric inside,
and we gutted it and made it...
Yeah.
Make us an offer.
We started at $250,
but we're really willing to go down to anything,
'cause in 25 minutes, it will be worth zero to us.
We need to sell it.
I don't know if you know, my husband's like,
"Come on. Come on."
Aww.
Oh, thank you.
Okay.
Mmm.
I like how you keep looking at your wrist.
I know. I'm looking at my watch.
SPENCER: Our teams have been racing against the clock,
hoping to flip their finds here at the Long Island City Flea.
Art, people. Art.
The skies have brightened for Katie and Pels,
who are now sold out.
We've sold our items. They've got two to go.
You know, we're just gonna wait and see what happens.
But for Chandi and Kim,
the situation looks pretty stormy.
Time is almost up,
and they still have their kitchen island
and their funky antler jewelry box to sell.
We have seven minutes. Make us an offer.
[ Gasps ]
It was $250, yeah, was what we were hoping.
How about $100?
Eighty bucks? Okay.
Thank you.
Do we have a deal?
We do. We have a deal.
Can you hand them the money? They have 10 seconds.
Three, four, five -- There you go.
Thank you.
Thank you.
I love it. I love it. I love it.
Thank you. Thank you.
And I'll take it -- My husband can...
And, no kidding you guys, check your arm --
Because time is now up.
We still don't know what they sold it for,
who's winning, so We're still waiting.
They had a price on their lamps, which they sold first,
so made me a little nervous.
Great.
We're feeling all right.
We feel like we had to give a little at the end.
We sold all three.
Let's find out how much you gave,
and was it worth it?
I want to talk about the bar,
because you got asking price -- $350 --
which makes one wonder, did you price it too low?
Maybe.
We sold it.
You guys, Chandi, Kim --
They made a huge profit, huge profit
on your very industrial wire-basket light fixtures.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
But there can be only one team that will sing in this rain,
and it is...
Katie and Pels.
Yay!
Congratulations!
Feel really happy and relieved.
Yeah.
Yes.
We had a really great time.
We got to shop at flea markets,
we got to shop on other people's money,
we met a lot of fun people -- It was great.
And that, everybody, is this...
slightly damp episode of "Flea Market Flip."
