Hello! My name is Duane Carter and on behalf of Expert Village, I am going to be talking
today about learning how to listen to and appreciate music. In the previous segment,
we discussed the five elements of music. Melody, harmony, pitch, rhythm and timbre. But do
you know we often use these elements to determine whether we like a piece of music or not. It's
true. Do you often find yourself singing the melody because you like that melody? It sticks
in your head. Or are you particularly attracted to the way the chords change from one to another
backing up that melody? This is called harmony. The beat of the song is rhythm. Particularly
in popular music this is the element that we are attracted to first. Timbre on the other
hand is like I said in the previous segment, is the color of the music. We tend to think
of ballets or slow songs having a warm timbre where the dance music is hot. Pitch is something
we think of subconsciously particularly when a song is sung or played out of tune then
we recognize that something is wrong with the pitch.
