Hey guys, it's Scottie.
So I wanted to talk to you about the anti-gay law happening in Russia right now, and how
it has to do with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. But that's too serious of a topic
so I thought that we would make a drink instead.
So what reminds you of Russia? ***! And what reminds you of gay people? The color
pink. So I thought we would make a cosmopolitan.
So a cosmopolitan follows a simple 4, 3, 2, 1 recipe. It's 4 parts ***, 3 parts cranberry
juice, 2 parts triple sec, and one part lime juice. And you can use a shot glass to measure
each part.
So if you want to know a little bit more about the anti-gay law in Russia. What happened
was Vladimir Putin signed into legislation a law basically banning LGBT people from Russia.
He says that it's propaganda but really it's just blatant discrimination.
The problem with all of this is that Russia is hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics. And any
LGBT athlete or any LGBT spectator could potentially be arrested under this law.
There's a lot of people who are calling for a boycott of the Winter Olympics in Russia,
but really I'm not for a boycott. And the reason why is this is the LGBT community's
opportunity to have sort of their "Jesse Owens" moment.
There are several LGBT athletes competing in the Winter Olympics in 2014. From the United
States we have Johnny Weir, he's a figure skater. And there's a speed skater in New
Zealand. And of course there are allies, and those are folks who support the LGBT community,
who are also athletes.
Now we're going to use our triple sec, and we're going to pour two shots of this.
Last part's lime juice. Cause this is pretty sweet and we're going to calm that down a
little bit.
This is the fun part. Gotta shake it.
So when you're watching the 2014 Winter Olympics next year, whether you're in Russia as a spectator
or whether you're watching it on your television, make yourself a cosmopolitan and have a drink
every single time an LGBT athlete takes a stand for equality or when one of our allies
does really well.
Cheers to our Winter Olympians.
