We got some of our veteran students together for focus groups and asked them what do you
want, what do you need? How can we best assist you in your transition? and what came of those
focus groups really was they wanted to meet with other peers and learn from other peers
and get advice and direction.
There’s a lot of bureaucracy involved with veteran benefits and it makes it a lot easier
if you have a support unit, a group of people that have been dealing with the same things
and have the answers to these questions already.
We all have good days and bad days so we help each other out and that’s just the way we’re,
the way we get, wired when we come out of the military. We’re, we’re just made that
way…..We look for other military people to turn to.
We, our peer mentor program, we break down all the student veterans that are incoming
into groups. Each peer mentor contacts certain groups of incoming student veterans to let
them know about our program, give them web resources, let them know where our office
is. And say hey, look I’ll be your personal, you know, I’ll be your personal assistant
here in this, and if you’ve got any issues, contact me first. Here is my number.
