Finding Articles at the Purchase College Library
you're writing a paper about how gender affects gaming habits
your professor wants you to use scholarly article--articles presenting original
research that have been reviewed by experts knowledgeable about the topic
sometimes these are also called refereed peer-reviewed or academic articles
in order to find scholarly articles, you'll need to use a database
library databases offer the best way to search for and find
article citations for thousands journals magazines and newspapers.
You're not likely to find these available for free on the web!
Also many very databases containing the full text of articles
Databases can also contain other content such as audio and video files, images and book chapters
You can access a databases from on or off campus
If you're off campus you will be asked for your account username and password
The user name is just your first name dot last name and your password is your email password
A good place to start if you're not sure which database to choose
is a multi-disciplinary database. There are several ways to get the databases
from the library's homepage
You can use the articles tab. You can choose a subject area
or you can view an alphabetical list of the databases to which the library subscribes
Each database will look a little different but they all basically do the
same thing
Let's begin by using Academic Search Complete
You have lots of options to help you get the best results from your search.
You can limit your search by date, article type, or publication publication
but be careful with full text only because you might miss out on useful
articles that the library has access to in another database
For your search, type in only the main keywords from your topic
Remember your topic is how gender affects gaming habits
So the keywords would be "gaming" and "gender" you can see this database joins the
As you can see, this database joins keywords using "AND"
so that the search results will include articles with both of your keywords
This initial search finds 109 citations
If you want magazines and newspapers you can narrow the search that way
Since you need scholarly journal articles, limit your results to just those
Now you have ninety-six citations
This database provides subject thesaurus terms that may be related to your
topic and help you focus your results. because
Choose "sex differences" because it is a different way of phrasing your topic.
Clicking on the title of an article brings you to the
full record of the article
This tells you who wrote the article and where and when it was published
It also includes an abstract or summary as well as a subject headings to help
you find other relevant items

To view more citations, go back to your results page
If you see an article that doesn't have a full text link
try the Find It@Purchase button. The FindIt button searches other databases to
find the full text to the article
If the library subscribes to a database that contains the full text of your article,
you will see link to article or to journal It looks like this article is available
so click on the "article" link
If you don't find the full text of an article you want,
the find a button will let you search the catalog
or request the article through interlibrary loan.
