By the end of the century over 180 million people in sub-Saharan Africa alone could die as a result of climate change
It is not too late to stop dangerous climate change

Rain will you come, yes!
For the rain to come here, yes!
"It will never end like a lake"
That is what our people usually say when they want to say
this thing can not finish it's just like Lake Turkana.
His death was a result of
the famine and hunger.
We live in the same conditions from childhood to adulthood and then get married.
The government tells us they are helping. But they ignore us.
They stay in Nairobi, a place we don't know
and that has caused the lake to run out of fish.
then they come and lie to us saying we are citizens.
and that if we go to school we will be better off.
This isn't true.
We are just waiting for death.
THE WEATHER GODS
We often hear people say it's caused by dirty skies
that's why there are changes in the weather patterns
Sizani Mazibuko
Sometimes it rains in January
Sometimes it doesn't rain at all
This terrible weather causes problems for me
I have to use the child support grant to buy food.
If the weather conditions were better
I could save this money for my children's clothing.
It has been raining too much
We can't even start to get in our farms and work.
It's unusual for snow to fall this low.
It's unusual for snow to fall this low.
It kills our livestock
They say it's caused by air pollution in urban areas
I don't know why we are being affected here. We don't have industry that pollutes the air
Kadia Semake
The year before last year it rained well at the beginning of the rainy season.
But it stopped in the middle
My rice crops dried up as if burnt by fire.
It's hard to cope with these difficulties
If it doesn't rain well, when drought occurs
the shea bush changes and stops making fruit
just like our vegetables
if they get rain
we get good yields
but without rain
they die
Adama Diarra
If you miss rainy season
you have to wait a whole year
you can't harvest there is nothing you can do
except migrate
People who stay at home can not find money
The majority of people have left
there is not any family here who doesnt have one member in the city.
If they are hungry they get tired and I get angry thinking that they're not working well
When you are facing problems you don't want to see children suffering
because I feel desperate
It leads me to feel ashamed
and I am lost without solution
We are eating what we need to save for the future
but if there is prosperity you secure their future.
The last time it rained was 10 years ago.
10 years without rain.
Traditionally it rains every April
and in March in some places.
We get rain every August and a little in December.
But now we don't have that formula.
We only get showers every two years, showers not rain.
This lake water, to us, especially those who live around the lake, means everything
There are no fish nowadays.
Let me tell you.
The fish need deep water
where they can get cool climate
so they move up there.
So that's where we go and get fish.
There is an old saying
They used to say it like that
but the way the lake is moving
I think that idiom will lose meaning.
It's because of the drought like the one you see right now
The animals have died
We cannot grow crops because there is no rain
So we depend only on the lake.
My husband was ambushed and shot just like that.
The fighting between the Merrille and Turkana
started when I was young
I had two kids then that's when it started.
They killed people. Before we lived together in peace.
You can eat with them, sell them necklaces
and later they come to kill you because of lack of food.
If we had support and guns we would take revenge.
It rains somewhere and everyone goes there. Then others don't want people to come to their side.
So they kill each other because of grass and water.
There is one thing that I believe in
wealth, the land, the animals are my wealth and the lake
From the time we came here we have been poor
we had wealth and something destroyed all of that
The lake was our source of livelihood and still is
Two enemies have robbed us of the wealth and left us with nothing
An African, an enemy kills me every day and has robbed me of everything
People from Ethiopia come into our land Merille come every night
We are poor there is no place to get justice
you have seen the problems at the lake
there is no wealth to talk about many people have suffered
Sometimes we get help from the NGOs
They don't consider long term projects for the community.
If they could change their attitudes and come up with the long term solutions
to problems in the community, I think we will really benefit.
First in the case of the lake, I blame the Ethiopian government for blocking the Omo river.
First in the case of the lake, I blame the Ethiopian government for blocking the Omo river.
Because that's what has caused the reduction of the lake.
Secondly for the rain, I possibly would blame the bigger companies
bigger industries in Europe and countries in the Western world.
because I think the impact of their factories is what has contributed to climate change.
Subsistence Farmer
Mbongeni Mahlobo
There was just no success for us this year.
Subsistence Farmer
The shea butter is important because there is no rice anymore
It is medicine and we eat it.
When we don't have money we sell it to buy food, clothes and many things
they wont do anything till it rains again. what if it doesnt rain again?
They don't get anything
We have 5 women's associations here each with 30 members
Every Wednesday each member pays 200 CFA ($2 US)
When I run out of money I borrow from the association's fund to buy food again.
Sadia Samake
The water measurement is important for all the farmers
in the beginning people didn't understand
but now people come to me when I check the water guage
they want to know if the rain level is sufficient to sow. If it is we sow together
If it is not we wait for the next rain
Every farmer here is informed
My education helped me alot
When I started I couldn't even read my name.
now I can
I can handle many things by myself now.
like documents.
I once had a goat, but I sold it when I was facing problems feeding my children
If this difficulty persists the future will be difficult
all you have to save for the children can't be saved
We live here with a lot of problems.
The lake is getting smaller.
Subsistence Farmer
People wait for the rain before they go to work on the farm
If God wants wants to give you rain he will.
but we dont know why he refuses to give us water
Rural people have to be helped first
the country exists because rural people exist
Subsistence Farmer
and right now we are facing starvation
our animals have died
we can't go anywhere else
we can't abandon our land.
District Chief
I am very sure I am the youngest chief in our county
I am not sure about the whole country
and the drought is killing the only remaining people
the lake is destroyed there is no fish, it is receeding
Let them come back with their guns and finish us
Let them come back with their guns and finish us
Is there a law that says a government should abandon its citizens
Paull Zaporrah
Come and finish me Come and finish me
