Welcome to the Bay College Library Tutorial
Searching for a Book in the Library Catalog. This tutorial will show you how
to search in the Library Catalog for books.
The Library Catalog is the first place for students to start their research
and to find great entertainment material. We will first demonstrate
searching for a Book using a keyword search. Let's say
our research topic is Social Networking, and you need several book sources.
We will begin by typing in our topic
in the keyword search box, then either hit Enter
or click the Go button.
To narrow our search results to just books, check the box next to Books
under the format options on the left side of the screen.
To check to see if the book is available and to see the books call number,
click Availability. You can now see that that this book
is located at the Bay College Library in the general book stacks
and that the book is available. Lastly,
you will see the call number of the book so you can locate it in the book stacks.
if you click the title of the book, you will see more information about the book
including the summary, subjects, location and call number,
details, reviews,
tags, and similar items.
Pay attention to the subjects and the record
because you can use these terms again when refining your search
in the Library Catalog. From this screen you can also view a citation
if you were to use this book as a source for your paper, a print
and e-mail function to print or e-mail this record, an
add to list function if you wanted to add this book to a reading list,
and a share function if you want to share this record with others.
Now we will demonstrate an author search. To search by author,
first click Advanced Search on the library search bar. Then,
type in the author's name in the Author search box,
and click Search. To narrow your results to only books,
once again, check the Book box on the left side of your screen.
To see where the book is located and if it's available,
click Availability. This book
is located in the general book stacks under the Fiction section.
Click the title of the book to view more information.
You will now see the summary, subjects,
location and call number, details,
reviews, tags, and similar items.
From this screen you will see the cite,
print, e-mail, add to list,
and share features. Some records include a preview of the book
that allows you to see a limited sample online.
