Let me just start by saying Thank you everyone for coming.
Now this graph right here shows all the common causes of death in the United States.
House Fires, Prostate Cancer, Breast Cancer, Automobile Accidents don't even total the quarter million
people that die each year due to cardiac arrest. This is a major topic that is never really brought up.
Linda Hinder states from the Cardiac Arrest Program yearly round since 2000, 330,000 die annually due to cardiac arrest.
This is major this is unbelievable and we all here any one of us could be at rest for cardiac arrest.
Today I got my friend here and she's gonna come on up and we're gonna use our imagination.Kristie just went into cardiac arrest
She's laying down and I don't know whats going on and I'm just going be walking around and I see her laying there. What am I going to do?
Well today ladies and gentlemen I'm going to teach you the simple steps of CPR.
First thing we're going to do, in a panic when doing CPR you need to remember your ABCs. Air way, Breathing and Circulation.
So Kristie is laying here what I'm going to do first when preforming CPR your all going to be very nervous, your adrenaline gonna be running
your gonna be very scared your not really gonna know what to do but I'm going to teach that.
Your gonna keep in mind that you need to remember your ABC's throughout the whole presentation. Air way, Breathing, Circulation.
Kristie's laying there what am I gonna do? I'm gonna survey the scene I don't know cardiac arrest it could be drug over dose it could be from drowning
it could be from a heart attack and simply while preforming CPR I do not want to get myself injured while doing it.
So Kristie's laying here I'm gonna survey the scene. I'm gonna check if there's electric wires around, if there's needles from drugs.
I don't know whats going on I just found her. So as I look I'm gonna survey. Its ok to touch her cause I just surveyed the scene.
So I'm going to shake her, "Are you ok? Are you ok?" Kristie doesn't answer I know she's unconscious.
This is when I'm going to call for 911. Either I'm going to call 911 I mean its 2009 who doesn't have a cell phone? [laughing]
Or someone else is going to call for 911 ok. Call for 911. While their calling for 911 first step of your ABC's is air way. Make sure her air way is clear
by doing this you could do a jaw press head tilt. Putting your two fingers underneath her jaw and lifting up
like that. Her airways clear now. Now I'm going to do the breathing. I'm gonna come down as you see I'm going to be checking her pulse and I'm gonna have my ear as close as I can
to her nose watching the rise and fall of her chest. One one thousand two one thousand three one thousand four one thousand five one thousand six one thousand
seven one thousand eight one thousand nine one thousand ten one thousand. As you see your going to do that for ten seconds.
This tells you if the patient is not breathing or doesn't have a pulse. After that your going give your two initial breaths.
Your two breaths, I'm going to be using a steel easy. I am a life guard and I've been doing it for the last three years.
I've been certified in LS association and with that they gave this to use and if you don't have one a steel easy to use
what your going to do is grab the nostrils and make sure there is no air coming out when you put your two initial breaths in. Each breath should last about a second
so this is what we're going to do. And if you do have one of these I'll teach you how to do it.
Two thumbs and your gonna have your fingers like your holding two guns. Your gonna put it over her mouth and your gonna lift the jaw up.
Your gonna breathe, breathe, i'm not gonna really breathe cause she might really need cardiac arrest. [laughing] So your gonna breathe, breathe. Breaths do not go in
what your gonna do then is. I just did my air way. I just did my breathing. Whats after AB? C. Circulation. By doing this you do your chest compressions.
Make sure you lift this arm up. You want to be as close as you possibly can to your patient. By doing this your gonna take, everybody can do this
now your gonna take your middle finger and your pointer finger hold it up come up to your chest and right in the middle you'll feel your sternum
and a triangle of bone right there and your gonna place your palm on that and your other hand over that.
So right now with Kristie I'm gonna do that and it should be one and a half inches away from your ***.
Ok so your gonna put them there and one arm like this and the other arm like this.
Now this is the major thing about chest compressions whats going on with this.
My chest compressions aren't going in you need to keep your arms very straight. Use your muscles we all have them.
And your gonna do one two three four five six seven eight nine ten one two three four five six seven eight nine
twenty one two three four five six seven eight nine thirty. Your going to do thirty chest compressions after that
we're going to reassess just like the beginning. We're going to start back at our airway clear the air way reassess the situation. One one thousand two one thousand three one thousand
four one thousand five one thousand six one thousand seven one thousand eight one thousand nine one thousand ten one thousand.
And then we're gonna end it with two initial breaths. Breathe, breathe that was one cycle of CPR to conclude CPR you need to do five cycle. Now that you just saw that we're not gonna do five cycles for you
but that was one cycle of CPR. Now remember in this come to back to the 250,000 people that passed away each year due to cardiac arrest look around the room.
Now you might have the chance to save one of your fellow class mates one of your friends or family members. Thank you and have a great day.
