Not long ago we had to abandon our land to the Algerian desert and still has not given us time to realized what have happened
1975 The Green March
350000 civilians and 25000 soldiers cross the border of Western Sahara in a march organized by Morocco
The Spanish government abandons the colony giving the territory to Morocco and Mauritania
We went from one hiding place to another, from one well to another getting away from bombs of white phosphorous and nepal.
We can only care for the wounded and remember those who remain there
We wonder how long the exile will last before returning to our home again
1980: Morocco begun to construct large walls in the desert to defend occupied territory of Sahara
The world biggest WALL OF SHAME is 2700 km long and surrounded by the millions of landmines
Even though in 1991 the peacekeeping plan proposed by UN was signed to finish the conflict, the walls keep growing.
2700 km wall built by Marocco and seeded with millons of landmines
to keep the Saharawi people from returning to their homeland
Isidro Lopez-Aparicio: "We are in a conflict. The conflict in the Sahara.
During a conflict can be done many things. You can intervene in many ways.
But here we have chosen to intervene in an artistic way. Art can help to think and can help change the world.
All these reflections, leaded to an appropriate place can save a country, like in case of Sahara, from forgetfulness,
can remove it from its isolation and make that people, not only remember it, but also get involved to a Western Sahara case".
Pamen Pereira: "Artifariti emerges as a weapon of reflection and visibility for the actual situation suffered by the Saharawi people".
Fernando Peraita: "Artifarit already beginning to become a landmark in the art world,
not a nice work, but the art in defense of human rights in defense of peace.
That is what we intended when concevimos this idea of holding these arts meetings in the liberated territorios".
Abidin Bucharaya: "Used to create illusion, to strengthen and consolidate the new generations
the concept of culture that is an essential vehicle to fight for peace and freedom".
Isidro Lopez-Aparicio: "Art has many approaches, the approach which ARTifariti has to the art is the art that makes you think,
the art which make you reflexct and in particular on the Saharawi conflict".
My name is Mohamed Moulud
Mohamed Moulud Dismel Omar. I'm an artist.
I came to Artifariti in Order to participate
to get experience or to take lessons from the artists
with the more thorough knowledge then I have
and so to master this weapon
which as a gun or a missile
I could also use it for my cause
I come from Saharian Refugee Camps. I live in Auserd
And I am normal person, as any other Saharawi.
When our people commited to
a cease-fire before the International Community
all young Saharawi people decide to
look for different ways apart from guns
it means going on fighting without taking up arms again
or needing guns again
so I fight through Art
and Art may get futher than a bullet or a missile
so this is why I'm here:
in order to master this weapon
Well my great dream is to see my people back home
going back to Aaiun, Smara, Dahla..., Bishdur, Auserd
And be... just like anyone else
enjoy complete freedom, to be at your place, this is my dream:
to see my people free.
