Hello, this is Christine Kruse, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in
Salt Lake City. This briefing will provide some information regarding a major pattern shift
for next week. This briefing was prepared on Friday afternoon and should not be
used after Sunday.
A big change in the weather pattern is expected next week. Expect warm and sunny
conditions with above normal temperatures through Sunday for much of the state. Starting
Monday, cold and unsettled weather is expected to develop from northwest to southeast
Monday into Tuesday and continue through midweek. This storm system may bring snow
down to the valley floors across central and southern Utah outside of Washington
County.
We expect three main impacts with this storm. First, cold and unsettled weather can be
expected state-wide Monday through midweek. The next main impact will be the potential
for accumulating snow across the mountains of Utah. The highest probability of
accumulating snow will be across the central and southern Utah mountains, with less
certainty across the northern Utah mountains. Finally, winter driving conditions will
be possible starting Monday across the higher passes of the state including any seasonal
roads that may still be open. There is also the potential for snow levels to fall as low as
6000 feet, especially across central and southern Utah Tuesday evening into Wednesday
morning.
With this forecast, our highest confidence is in the arrival of much colder conditions statewide
starting Monday. We also have relatively high confidence accumulating snow will occur
across the central and southern mountains. We have medium confidence this storm will
produce accumulating snow across the northern mountains. As far as valley accumulations,
particularly across northern Utah, we have low confidence in this scenario at this time.
So to summarize, a slow moving storm will impact the entire state from Monday through
midweek, maybe even into Thursday. Temperatures will fall to below normal levels
across the entire state, so enjoy the beautiful weekend! Accumulating snow is expected
across the central and southern Utah mountains, but is less likely across the northern Utah
mountains.
