We bring in about 40 cubic yards of wood every year.
We usually have a working day where a bunch of the staff go up to the farm with the farm
commitee members. And, we go up and chop the wood, get it ready for delivery.
The building opened in 1919, they would have realized that an open hearth fire wouldn't
have been an effective means of heating a room. They certainly would never have cooked
on them. It seems that the intent was to have the character
of an open hearth fire. When we light a fire, usually people will
come around it. Quite often in the past there's been senior members request fires in rooms,
if they're just sitting and studying. Or just hanging out.
Senior members and students do definitely enjoy the natural fire a lot more. In the
open hearths, they're not contained. The open hearth just reflects the heat and light out.
People can enjoy it a lot more.
