My name is Elnatan Mataev and right now we are in Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania. Right now I'm more dealing with the pancreas and in the pancreas there is
some kind of cells, especially cells that called beta cells and these beta cells are
electrically active. This mechanism will lead to secretion of insulin. Insulin is very important
for people who are sick with diabetes for example.
I think that the spark about science again came when I was a kid. I always went to science
museums or history museums or always like was fascinated by this whole phenomenon. So
I come from Israel. I did my bachelor's degree in Technician Institute of Technology in Israel.
[Speaker 2]: Were your parents scientists?
[Speaker 1]: No. No one of my parents, neither my sisters, even none of my cousins who are
scientists so yes I'm indeed the pioneer over here. They wanted me to grow up and open my
own business because they believe that this is the way to succeed and I refused. For me,
math was pretty easy both in high school and in my bachelor's but I was say that math is
a skill. It's not the purpose unless you want to go and pursue a degree in math.
This is our, we call it the preparation lab. This is where it all starts before we even...
We are working in a community over here. We have like a community of researchers. Someone
else can read my research and say hey, now I can know how to deal with diabetes for example,
better. Or now I can find a different approach that no one has tried before.
This is science. I mean you take someone from someone else and you develop it and you make
it something new and that's what I have been doing so far and I know that after I will
go the other people will hopefully will take my work and continue to do something new with
it.
And what we do over here we use nanotechnology and nano science in order to investigate or
explore some activities of some electrical activities of cells and tissues. My goal is
to use this type of devices to record signals from 3D. I use silicone or germanium which
is a material that is similar to silicone in its properties. WE use them in order to
fabricate devices or to create some kind of devices.
The goal at the end is see hey look, over there we record the 3D and now we know something
that we haven't known before. And maybe we found something new that no one has done,
no one had even thought about before because no one have ever done before.
So remember the process that we did before we will try to apply
To the young people. I am not that old but I am not young. I am actually 26 years old.
First of all don't be intimidated. I mean, even if you are not the best student at school
and, grades will only be your entry ticket to the graduate school that's true. And you
should work on your grades but once you're in graduate school you need to prove yourself
and grades might not help you. So you need basically to reinvent yourself and it's fun.
It's really fun.
