Yes, we make them, we sell them
They have double walls and with isolation
and even though they looks simple, they have many special details.
With double glass
Yeah, it is a silicate inside the double glass that absorbs humidity
and keeps the system in the event some of the water or foods boils and stems up.
And how long it takes for this bread to be cooked?
It takes around 1 hour, may be more, with this weather.
Exactly, there are solar ovens we use for milk-cake, bread. This one for goat.
What makes them special?
Only the capacity they have, the inner volume.
This project began here more than 20 years ago.
People from University came and asked if we wanted to try solar energy for cooking
We agreed, organized as a neighbor union (a common local organization)
And then we had our first monitors. I’m also one of them
The idea was to organize a degustation centre for solar cooked food,
so we brought some stuff from our places
We set ovens and begun preparing cakes and bread for people that came
So it was not an NGO nor university that showed you the way
but your own initiative?
No, it was the idea of the group that was engaged.
We saw it turned out to be possible at home. Why not for more people?
Yes, cause the restaurant started with a small project including part of the kitchen
And now, you see, we have three pergolas, the sanitary facilities, and so on.
This year we installed this front part on oak.
We have invested in more ovens and different stuff for the restaurant
Our intention is to transform this place into a touristic place
So we want to enlarge our services
We offer just lunch service and the idea is to offer breakfast, coffee, and dinner.
This way we shift turns and increase the employment for more people in our community
Yes, we want to build a swimming pool and implement an organic orchard
wich we had before but water here is very expensive.
So we want to get water from a channel for irrigation
and produce our own vegetables for the restaurant
We buy our stuff to people here in the valley
and almost everything is bought here in the town.
And we buy our vegetables to a neighbor guy that brings them from La Serena.
Everything is from around.
What is your impression on that interchange we are in with Colombia communities?
And what you think of other people cooking with sun
not only in Chile but in other parts of the world.
What is your impression on that?
Its ok with me as long as they dont put up too much competition.
So you are really in the bussiness!
But for me it is very well
“The sun shines for all”, and it is good for them to try it
And persevering and with willingness everything is possible
Also the interchange is so important because you learn from us
and we learn from you and we integrate knowledge and experiences
