The smoking medallions, they're kind of an accident. We were originally planning on making
a cooking wood from apple or cherry wood or whatever hardwood would be good for cooking
with but what we found when we were making the logs, they don't go out. They just sit
there and smoke and smoke and smoke. One two inch piece of it can smoke up our whole building.
so our thought process was like man, if these things smoke that good they'd be awesome in
a smoker or barbecue grill top where you want to add a little bit of smoke to get the flavour
of a wood fire on a gas grill and so far it's a remarkable product. I don' t think there's
anything like it out there because of the simplicity of it. You know, when you're using
chips or regular firewood chunks in there they all burn up quite a bit quicker than
this condensed wood does. If you keep it right below its flash point to where it doesn't
flame it'll sit there and smoke for hours. Typically in most wood products that have
this type of compaction that are bound together this tight there is some time of glue that
binds it together if you're using a compaction process. What makes us different than anybody
else is the fact that the resin within the wood itself is your glue. And because of the
process and how it all works there's a second where it almost liquifies it within extrusion
process and then it glues itself back together. And it's a real small window where this all
happens. So it's consequently the process is pretty finicky and it's taken us a lot
of time playing with different kinds of wood to actually get it perfected. When you're
smoking with in a regular smoker or on your grill top you only need one little piece like
this size versus if you're using chips you might have to use multiple chips and then
you need to soak them and use a smoker box which becomes difficult and messy. This, the
medallion, you just set it on the grill top on a gas grill right where you put your food.
Find the hot spot put it on the there and let it start smoking and just move it around
the grill to wherever it to continues to smoke without catching fire. All the feedback we've
gotten has been wonderful. Especially the real avid smokers, people that understand
the difficulty of getting good smoke and how hard it is to get certain woods to smoke good.
But they're really impressed with the ease of it and much smoke it puts out. As soon
as people try this in the barbecue world, they'll never use chips again.
