When the operation was happening that night, I was in the command center
I was talking to people who were with Nasheed. I was constantly asking for surrender. If not his life is on the line
I was continuously saying that
The order was turned down and he claimed such a situation did not exist
I said, watch and see
In the end, at around 8 am, Nasheed called me and said he is ready to step down
He wanted arrangements to be made for him and his family to safely go to his native home or somewhere else
So, I told him, that will be ready and to go ahead with resignation.
And than, I asked one of our aides who was there (At the Army HQ) to go ahead with the resignation
But, at the same time understand this man is someone who changes his tune on a whim
Nasheed also said that he would never engage in poltics from now on.
I knew this was a lie, and I said, if you did not resign there were only two options
First, resign with bloodshed
Next, resign peacefully
And one of these two would happen today
In reality, the story about how he resigned with guns to his head is a lie
due to the fact the police had given up on him
because they knew he was going against the law
In reality, if he did not resign that day
People would have scalled the walls to kill him
I told my aides, to prepare the ladders, the time for it has come.
This is not a joke.
We would have put ladders on the walls of the police HQ
So the citizens could climb into the HQ and get rid of any police loyal to Nasheed
I told Nasheed aides exactly this, that there was very little time to resign
That's why he resigned, he resigned not cause of the police but cause of the people
