Happy New Year! Welcome to "Spread the Love." We have a two-fer for you today. This is Malled,
by Colleen Neuman, and consists of two one act plays, which both take place in a mall
food court. The first, "Ellenalicemonajune" has four teenage girls who tell the truth
to each other as only teenage girls can do. And the second is "Yes, Virginia, There Is
a Virginia," and has a mall survey which goes terribly topsy-turvy. Craig, what do you love
about these plays? Well, I really love both of these plays. They're
set in the same location, but they couldn't be more different from each other. The first
one is a slice of life. The characters are very naturalistic-they feel like real people.
And the dialogue is thoughtful, it's painful, and it's laugh out loud funny, and that's
the mark of some great writing. Now, the second play-I can't even begin to describe it for
you. It's theatre of the absurd, in a mall. You really have to read it for yourself. Both
of these plays are gems and deserve your attention. Lindsay?
There is a special feeling when I open up my inbox, and there's a new submission. And
I see it might be suitable for Theatrefolk, and I start to read, and excitement bubbles
in my stomach, and I read more, and I get more and more excited, to the point where
I cannot wait to talk to the playwright, to see if we can include their play in our catalogue.
And I felt that way about both of the plays in Malled. I love that they're so different.
I love that one is character driven and one is genre driven. They would make an awesome
night of theatre-and there's all women characters! "Ellenalicemonajune" has four! "Yes, Virginia,
There Is a Virginia," has fifteen! We're always being asked for all-female casts, and this
one has two! So, you need to go read Malled. Right now. You should go. And this is "Spread
the Love."
