This video will briefly demonstrate how to use English Mate.
There are 3 things that must be prepared beforehand.
First, you need English Mate program.
Those who don't have the program need to install it first.
The program installation video can be watched from the link at the bottom left of the screen.
The second is a user account, and the last is a movie DVD,
which can be borrowed from library, computer room, or the person who keeps them.
When you run the program, the first page will look like this.
Fill in your username and password to log in.
If you forget your username or password, press "Forget your password?" to reset the password.
When you first log in, you will notice that there's no movie DVD.
The program will tell you that there's no DVD in the DVD drive.
You need to insert the DVD into the drive, press "Reload movies?", and wait.
The program will analyze which movie DVD is inserted.
As you can see, colored buttons appear after the page is refreshed.
Each button is a movie chapter that you can watch.
In this case, I am using Rio movie which has 3 chapters, so there are 3 buttons.
It can also be seen that the buttons have two colors: blue and red.
Blue color means that you can watch the chapter, and red color means that you can't.
To be able to watch those chapters, you must first watch the previous chapter and pass its quiz.
Now let's watch the first movie chapter.
After you press "Play," the screen will be split into two parts.
The left side is the movie screen, and the right side is English Mate's tool.
The movie consists of English audio and subtitle.
While you are watching, if you don't understand the movie,
you can pause it by pressing space bar or right click on the movie screen.
Once the movie is paused, Thai subtitle will appear.
You will also notice that some words are highlighted in colors.
They are vocabulary words in English Mate program.
This means that they have a chance to be in the quiz at the end of the chapter,
and you have to remember their meanings and understand their uses.
Furthermore, different colors indicate different part of speech of the vocabularies.
Blue color is a noun, red is a verb, green is an adjective, and brown is an adverb.
There is also purple color, which is used for idioms and phrases with specific meanings.
Let's now focus on the panel at the right side of the screen.
You can see that there's a long list of vocabulary words, which you should know from the movie.
If you don't understand a word's meaning or want to know when they are used,
you can press the word, and the movie will jump to the scene that it appears.
Aside from vocabulary words, you can also jump to any subtitle line in Subtitle tab.
Then, you can choose at which point you want to watch.
For those who wonder why there is no vocabulary list when they first watch the movie,
it is because you have to finish watching the chapter so that all vocabulary words will appear.
If you want more explanation about one word, you can press Question tab.
There you will see an online dictionary search.
When you look up for the word "awesome," the program will search its meanings for you.
If you have any question about vocabularies, movies, or anything about English,
you can ask via Facebook and Twitter anytime.
For example, if you press "Ask on Facebook," you can ask questions on Ask English page.
Also, please like the page if you haven't.
Now let's go back to the movie screen.
Any time you feel that the conversation in the movie is too fast,
you can decrease the speed by pressing "Slow" button at the bottom right corner of the program.
Then, the movie will proceed with slower speed, making it easier to follow the conversation.
When the movie automatically pauses while you are watching the movie,
it means that the chapter is finished.
You will notice that a long blue button at the right panel appears.
Press it to start doing a quiz.
As I have mentioned earlier, the quiz will be about the movie, and there are 5 quiz types.
Nonetheless, only 3 of the 5 will be chosen for a quiz.
For this quiz, the first type is Fill in the Blank.
You have to type a vocabulary word in each empty box.
When you are done, press "Next" to proceed to the second section.
Please remember that you can't redo the previous quiz section,
so make sure that your answers are correct before proceeding to the next section.
This part is the matching between vocabulary words and their meanings.
Just like before, press "Next" when you are done.
The last section is Multiple Choice type of question.
You have to choose the correct answers.
Press "Submit" when you are done with every section, then the program will automatically check the quiz.
If you are able to meet a certain condition, you will get an award, which will be explained more later.
Now let's look at the quiz result.
If you get the score of 60%, it means you pass the quiz and is able to watch the next chapter by pressing "Proceed."
However, if you don't pass the quiz or isn't satisfied with the score, you can retry the quiz.
If you want to know which answers are wrong, you can check them out by scrolling down the page.
The program will show the correct answers and explain why they are correct.
Now let's go back to the profile page by pressing "Back home" to see what the awards are.
Then, press Awards page in the menu. In this page, you can see pictures of the awards you got
as well as many awards that are still locked.
You can use the mouse to hover each picture to see the condition to unlock it.
For example, Beginner's Skill award is unlocked by getting full scores in all quizzes in a movie.
It's not too hard, is it?
Also, Limit Break award is unlocked when you get to level 10,
but what is level 10 though?
Let's go back to the profile page.
There you can see a yellow bar and a number.
The bar will increase according to the quiz scores you get.
When the bar is filled up, you will gain one level.
To put it simply, this is the same as watching movies to gain more levels.
This is roughly how English Mate works.
Those who are done watching the first chapter can continue to watch the second chapter.
