This is a song I wrote in December 1980 called, "Smell the Coffee."
Hi, I'm David Daniels from Chick Publications.
Hey, brother, wake up and smell the coffee,
Don't get yourself sick on too much toffee!
Don't try to prove that it's good for you, when it's not!
Hey, brother, the sun is arising,
And I know it sounds silly, or maybe surprising,
But the rest of your life is the only life that you've got.
Well, you say to me, "I'm happy and free,"
But you know you're not growing spiritually,
And though you may not know it, that's hypocrisy.
You don't know what you feel inside.
Well, you say, "I got it! I'm complete,"
With chains on your arms and cement on your feet;
And you say, "I'm okay; I am one of the elite!"
But you're never satisfied!
Well, you fool yourself by saying, "I am immortal,"
And you think your front door is the ultimate portal,
And you're strutting outside, and I hear the neighbors chortle!
When will you ever learn?
Well, you say, "I am my own salvation,
God, hiding in my own creation,"
But those words, to the Lord, are your own damnation,
But you don't have to sit and burn!
God bless you, and have a wonderful day.
