This video will provide you with an overview
of effective steering techniques, hand positioning,
the use of indicators and important safety checks
whilst driving. For the pull-push and hand over hand steering techniques
start with your hands either in the 10 to 2
or quarter to 3 positions on the steering wheel like a clock face
when using the pull-push technique your hand should not cross
to turn right you'll be pulling down with the right hand
and pushing up with the left. To turn left
the left hand will pull down while the right hand will push the steering wheel up
The hand over hand technique is performed by turning the steering wheel
approximately
ninety degrees in the direction at the turn with both hands
The lower hand then turns over the
other hand to the 12 o'clock position, the other hand then follows
the process can be repeated to complete the turn. Ensure your hands
remain on the outside at the rim on the steering wheel
and use both hands to steer at all times
unless you're operating the vehicle controls or when reversing
Be aware of the position
of the front wheels when moving off from a stationary position
and avoid turning the steering wheel when the vehicle is stationary
whenever
moving a vehicle from stationary, turning,
merging or changing lanes, it's important to use your indicators
When moving left or right ensure the correct indicator is used to signal
surrounding traffic
of your intentions for a minimum of 5 seconds
before completing the manouevre. Ensure you've checked side and
rear mirrors and completed a blind spot check
by turning your head before moving the vehicle
by ensuring you complete these procedures
and safety checks you'll maintain a safe environment for yourself
and other drivers when ever you're behind the wheel
so stay safe and happy driving
