I remember the first time my Dad actually mentioned it
he was like, listen Jazmin,
we're gonna go to a different country, you're gonna meet different people
education is the most important thing and that's one of the reasons why I'm
bringing you here
I think we'll be better off in New York
I did my best in everything I did
I was Editor in Chief of the yearbook, Valedictorian,
Vice President of the National Honor Society, and
when the letters started coming in, both of the schools I
really wanted to go to accepted me.
And I knew that it was going to make my dad happy, but I didn't know it was $30,000
out of pocket. Finally, Pace was like
why isn't your FAFSA going through, like, why don't we have any
like any record so what your Mom or Dad makes, and I said
well that's because I'm undocumented and I got chills
I really did like that was the first time I actually admitted it.
For financial aid
they need those nine digits.
You don't know the barriers until you're face-to-face with them.
So, letters for CUNY started coming in. Because, financially that's all we could afford.
but my SAT scores held me back
I didn't score high enough for CUNY, so they were
overlooking my application. But, that changed
when Make the Road came in and said, "Pick the three
schools you really wanna go to, and we're going to appeal for them."
It was going to help the Admissions Counselor re-evaluate my
application, and now I was waiting for for the John Jay one
with so much anticipation, because I really wanted to go there.
And I got in.
The way they
advocated for me, it impacts who I will meet in the future.
or how I will live in the future.
And, I know there's people in my shoes. You know you're not the only one
going through your struggles.
Hi guys, my name is Jazmin. Have you guys started thinking about what colleges
you want to go to?
I am now in my third month at John Jay.
My major is political science.
I want to help change the laws of this country that's keeping me behind.
All the DREAMers, and everybody that just doesn't have the same equality that other people would have.
