[Music] >>The CCE Summer Academies is an opportunity
for high school students to come to Sac State, they spend a week with us, about four hours
a day learning different disciplines. This week we spent time with the students studying
Greek theater, Greek performance; they took the text of "Oedipus the King" which is
the classic Greek myth, Greek tale by Sophocles. They broke it down and condensed it into a
twenty minute performance and we added choreography, we added movement, we added a three-person
chorus and they did their own variation of "Oedipus the King."
>>Stop my lord, here comes Jocasta coming from the house, she will help settle the fight
you argue about.
>>Creon, go into the house and don't make your problems bigger than what they already
are.
>>I play the part of the priest, in the beginning, he's kind of begging Oedipus to save the
city because it's just going to ruins and no children are being born.
>>I basically come in and try to console Oedipus because he's going through a bit of a crisis
because he's realizing what he's been through, oh, my gosh, I married my mother
and had kids with her and killed my father.
>>It was really cool, it was really cool to see them come in on Monday, a bit timid, a
bit shy and get to know each other and get to know the text and just blossom in these
characters.
>>It was a really good learning experience, we got to learn about Greek theater and the
origins of all of this and I got to meet a lot of cool new people.
>>I absolutely loved it, I felt it was fantastic, a great learning experience and I would love
to do it again and I wish it went longer than just a week.
