Just in time for Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, there’s a fresh iPhone rumor
floating around.
Parts reseller ETradeSupply is showing off video of what appears to be a chunk of the
iPhone 5 casing.
“It’s a really different size. The new part is real big. Some people have said the
new iPhone design is maybe four inches. I think it’s true.”
This video backs up rumored images of the casing that were floating around late last
month. 9to5 Mac wants to believe.
“Other findings from our photos that are affirmed by this video include the unibody/integrated
approach for the antenna band and back portions of the device, a relocated headphone jack
(now on the bottom), and an overall taller design.”
CNET says it’s one of two things: sneaky marketing on Apple’s part, or a lapse in
security.
“…an increasing number of sources are now showing off what appears to be the same
product design. Either Apple has found a way to get the rumor mill off its scent and onto
fake features, or they're on to something.”
iDownloadBlog gives it good odds it’s fake. Apple keeps a pretty sharp ear to the ground.
“It’s a known fact that Apple floats around fake parts and prototypes to help expose leaks
in its supply chain. And Tim Cook recently made it clear that his company was going to
start taking its already-notorious secrecy policy to the next level.”
So yes. It’s a rumor, and an Apple rumor to boot. Apple’s traditional release schedule
indicates the iPhone 5 won’t show up for months — and Gizmodo says a lot can change
in the meantime.
“Will it look like this? Maybe. Or maybe this is just a design that's being explored
and will be tossed by then. Or maybe some merry prankster is seeding parts suppliers
with iPhone MacGuffins.”
But Ubergizmo says — if the 4-inch iPhone is true, it’s likely to be well-received.
“An iPhone with a larger display is a feature that many users have been asking Apple over
the years and assuming the rumors this year are more accurate, it looks like their wishes
may very well come true.”
An official announcement on the next iPhone is widely expected sometime in October.
