I primarily teach courses in media, looking
at media critically.
Takes something that we see everyday and maybe not pay attention to and
training our eyes to look at it in a new way.
I am Nina Huntemann and I'm a professor of Media Studies here at Suffolk University.
I teach media and I teach at Suffolk because it gives me the opportunity to be in touch
with not only a wonderful base of students,
but also being in Boston
is exciting for me as a professor because it's one of the largest media
outlets, certainly in New England.
That means that not only to my students have the opportunity to perhaps
be professionally involved with the media industries in the local area,
I can bring those professionals into the classroom.
I've brought writers for the Boston Globe into my classes,
game designers from the very vibrant game development community that's in Boston
into my class,
I've brought anchor people from the local news media into my classroom, I've
had PR and advertising firm employees
come into my classroom.
One of the things that I'm very proud of about our program in Communication at Suffolk
is that it is a blend application and theory. Both are critical to be a good media professional,
whether or not you're going to go on to be an academic, or you're going to go on to
work in production, it's
important to be able to blend both
of those aspects.
It's an exciting time to be studying media, particularly for advanced graduate
students because there are opportunities to break into the media industry that didn't exist before,
particularly in Boston, with the
technological center that it is.
Students graduating with a Communication degree
from our program
go on to do all sorts of things.
I've sent students to graduate school for PhD work,
I've sent students to Hollywood to work in production, I have a student now
who's flourishing at the International Emmys in New York City, I've sent students
to go on to start their own businesses.
The program really prepares them for all those potential opportunities.
