Maori from the west of the South Island are concerned
about mineral exploration in their region.
The Government says the explorations will start on reserve land,
which has residents reeling.
This is one area that the government will survey for minerals,
which is a big concern for the people of Makawhio.
Aeromagnetic surveying will be
conducted from Haast to Karamea
which includes these World Heritage hills.
This surveying follows a similar project in Northland.
Mining companies are now analysing the results to decide whether
to bid for exploration licences.
The Mana Party is against all mining.
It will pollute our waterways and land,
whether it's in Northland or the South Island
or anywhere else.
The Ministry of Economic Development says
although the NZ World Heritage Area is being surveyed,
no tenders to mine it will be offered.
Makaawhio is now pursuing more information
and a guarantee from the government that the sites will be protected.
Results are due around May next year.
