Hi, my name is Juan.
Today I am going to give you some tips on how to interpret citations. Citations are found
towards the end of a book or an article, on the works cited page.
or the references section. They contain information
that allow for you to identify a book, chapter in a book
newspaper or an article by its
title, author, volume number
issue numbers, pages, columns, publisher
publication date, or place of publication. Citations are also used to get credit
all the source of information that you might have used or quoted in
let's say paper or your class project. And these citations will be found
in the works cited page. There are many type of citations
and it's really important to know the differences between the citations
so you can tell whether they are referring to a book
chapter in a book, journal, a newspaper,
or an article. There are also many styles of citations used.
You may have heard of MLA style
Chicago style, ACS style or many others.
Today, I am going to give you tips on how to properly
interpret APA style citations. So, now let's take a look at
this citation. This is a citation for an article.
The first element would be the name of the author
followed by the date in which the article was published.
the title of the article, the name of the journal
in which the article was published. Journal volume and issue numbers.
and the page number of the journal in which this article was published.
Now let's take a look at different types of citation.
This is a citation for a book. Book citations
are usually shorter and they are
easier to identify because they contain less information.
So, this citation will first will have the
name of the author, date in which the book was
published, the title of the book, the place in which this book
was published and the publisher of the book.
So, now let's take a look at the citation
for a chapter in a book. Notice how
you have information regarding the chapter of a book and then
information regarding the actual book. So the elements of this citation would be
the name of the author, the date in which this book was published
the title of the chapter and then
the editor's name, the title of the book
the place of publication, the publisher
and then the specific page numbers for the chapter being cited.
Now let's take a look for a citation
for a newspaper article. Elements for this newspaper article will include
a very specific date, specific pages
columns, and sometimes
specific measurements of the actual columns. Now let's look at how cite an article
you might have found online. This is a citation for a website article.
First it will include the name of the author,
the title of the article, website
the article was found in, the date in which the article was published
the specific date in which the website was actually viewed
and the specific URL.
That's all the information I have for interpreting different types of citations.
I hope it was helpful. Thanks.
