My name's Dean Sittig and I'm a professor here at the School of Biomedical Informatics in Houston
and I've got a PhD in medical informatics from the University of Utah
back in 1984 or '88 I guess, a very long time ago
and I'm interested in all aspects of clinical information systems
from the design, development, implementation and
also the evaluation of the systems
Lately over the past five years or so I've been particularly interested in
how to make sure that these systems are safe and effective for use by clinicians in the hospital
And, so towards that end we've been doing a lot of research trying to understand
how to make sure that the systems are safe
and we've developed an 8 dimension social technical model
that looks at all aspects of this problem
all the way from the hardware and software, the clinical content,
user interface, the people that are using these systems,
the workflow and communication that are used to bring this stuff together,
the internal policies and procedures and the environment that the systems work in,
the external forces that come together to force the systems to be used,
and then finally how you measure and monitor them
In terms of my teaching, I teach a class on the introduction to clinical information systems
where we go over the basics of these electronic health records and systems
try to understand where they came from, parts their composed of and
what clinicians do and how they use them and then I also teach an advance course on EHR analysis
where we go and visit different hospitals around the Houston area
and try to understand how these systems are being used in site too
