Every now and again the activity at Hawaii's Kilauea volcano intensifies. It's incredibly
dramatic but also incredibly hot - the spattering lava can reach temperatures of 1200 degrees
Celsius. This happened this week after experts predicted an increase in spattering. Due to
a build up of gas underneath the surface, which then exploded through. The US Geological
Survey says the gas can push the surface up by as much as 65 feet in the air. January
has been labelled an awareness month with numerous talks and discussions about the volcano.
Experts say the the lava had been flowing into the ocean but it's changed direction
to a remote area so it's harder for people to see. Towards the end of last year, some
tours had to be cancelled. Eruptions have been going on since 1983, but geologists say
the volcanic activity is currently steady.
