(Felicia playing Viola)
Music is a great way for me to
express myself in many different ways.
When I’m really stressed I can pick up a really
romantic piece and then just play my heart out into it.

My name is Felicia Hogan and
I am a Fulbright scholar and a graduate from
the University of Louisville.
I was initially torn between taking a
Fulbright to Korea as an ETA
or going to Argentina
to do medical research.
But after thinking about it I realized
that Korea would be the best option.
I’ve been doing tutoring with the REACH Center
for the past two years and I tutored in high school.
I felt a little more prepared to teach.
Since I am adopted from Korea I knew
that going to Korea would be much more than an
immersion into another culture but into
the culture that I’m actually related to, in a sense.

When I decided to do the ETA,
a big motivator for choosing that Fulbright
was the fact that I’m adopted from Korea.
Both of my parents are white.
They told me all along, of course, that I was adopted.

I guess I realize that how important and
how life changing the fact that
my parents adopted me was.
I wouldn’t have been able to
experience everything that I have experienced.
I am so grateful for everything my
parents have given to me.
And going to Korea is just a way of...
I guess me being able to appreciate it more.
Sorry.
But definitely, the whole Fulbright process
has helped me to realize how much I’ve been given.
