No matter which finish you choose to apply, you should always start with clean pipes.
So start by removing any stickers or tape with a putty knife - a little mineral spirits
can dissolve any sticky residue.
To get off the grease and grime the pipes can come with, mix up some Tri-Sodium Phosphate
or TSP according to the directions about 1/2 cup to 2 gallons of water is the right ratio
for this job. Let the pipes soak for a couple of minutes, then use a little scrubber pad
to clean them, and be careful when you're working around the threaded areas - those
edges can be surprisingly sharp! Rinse, dry, and you're ready to apply any finish you like.
