>> Linda Kahn: I'm Linda Kahn; I'm a student
in the Public Health Core Concepts program
at the University of Minnesota.
What I like about the core concepts program is the fact
that I had the option to take online courses.
There is a set of 6 classes I need to take
and they're offered both on campus as well as online.
That flexibility is really nice.
Instead of just being discussion groups, we have boards
that we post to so we have exchange of information
with students from across the country
who are enrolled in the class.
I have found that taking online course work allows me
to interact in a different way that I wouldn't have had
in the more traditional on campus setting.

I'm a member of the Health Disparities Work Group.
It is a group that is organized by two of the professors here
at the U who are very focused in health disparities.
What the Health Disparities Work Group does is brings awareness
to specific social determinates of health
that really impact public health.
We have an annual symposium that speaks to an issue
around a disparity and kind of a round table discussion.
We also offer other forum and lecture series and bring
in experts who are working both locally and globally
on the issues of health disparities
and solutions around that.

This year I've been volunteering as a member
of the National Public Health Week Film Festival Committee.
Well the Public Health Film Festival is a week-long event
that showcases different films on public health topics.
We have 5 nights; different themes.
And as a student I'm coming in as a volunteer to work
on the planning committee and help with overall planning
as well as one of the nights and the film,
so we selected our film.
We are working to bring together individuals who will be experts
as panelists, moderators, speakers around our event.
And really the intention is to bring awareness
within the community about these different public health issues
as well as solution.

I had a wonderful experience at the School of Public Health.
I would say one of the best parts has been my ability
to meet and learn from a number of individuals
from other communities around the world as well
as around this country, and also professors
who are really engaged.
One of my goals when I finish with my studies
at the university is to be able to work in policy
to make a difference in offering health and wellness programs
that are going to help disadvantaged communities.
