My name is Bob Osborne and Iím the Strategic Development Director here at Pearson. I want
to talk to you today about a series of events Pearson is hosting in association with CentreForum
about the new Key Stage 4 accountability measures and explain how they will affect your school
from 2016 onwards.
The most significant change in the new accountability measures which were announced by the DfE in
October 2013 is the introduction of the Progress 8 measure, which is to be first published
in 2016.
This means that the curriculum choices your Year 9 students make this year and the teaching
strategy you use with them will affect the way in which your studentsí performance and
the performance of your school is viewed in 2016.
Detailed modelling by the influential policy think tank CentreForum, based on 2013 results,
shows that under these new measures many schoolsí positions in performance tables change.
The aim of the conferences is to help you understand all the new measures, and in particular
how Progress 8 is calculated, and therefore enable you to make the most informed decision
possible for your students, using the latest available information.
At each of our events, you will hear from experts who have been involved in analysis
of the data and have modelled the changes to show how and why the movements occur. Once
you understand this, youíll be in a position to offer a curriculum that best aligns with
the needs of your students ñ and also be able to discuss this with colleagues from
other schools and exchange views.
The conferences are designed to illustrate the options open to you and they will cover
all the new measures and how they are derived, focus on Progress 8 as the new floor standard,
look at the impact of the new measures on a range of exemplar schools, show how relative
performance on progress and your curriculum offer interact in the new measure, theyíll
show how the needs of every learner can be at the heart of your curriculum planning and
theyíll offer a chance to discuss the new measures with colleagues from other schools
as well as experts from CentreForum.
The half-day conference will provide you with detailed case studies of how the measures
will impact different schools.
And if you choose a full day conference we will also present each school with a preliminary
analysis of its own Progress 8 measure based on CentreForum modelling of 2013 results.
By the end of the day you will know what is likely to happen to your school, if you keep
the same teaching strategy and curriculum offer.
So I do hope you will be able to join us and many of your colleagues to learn more about
these new measures. To find out more just click on the link on this page. We very much
look forward to seeing you at the events.
Thank you very much indeed.
