The journalist of the future needs to be well-versed in all kinds of disciplines. While you are
in school, utilize the time, your coursework, to take as many courses as possible in areas
that are not related, necessarily, to journalism. Learn more about geography, more about political
science, economics...because the future is for the person who can, at the drop of a hat,
understand a complicated story in a world where geopolitics plays such a role. Again,
if I were a sophomore or a junior I would be taking every class that I could outside
of the journalism school, whenever possible, to learn not so much about the craft but about
the specific subject matter. I'm in the 40th year of my career, and I'm still learning.
I mean, the passion for learning never goes away. I still try to, every single day, do
an exercise, do something that is different. You realize that 65% of my work right now
is working with tablets. And I devoted my entire life to working with newspaper design
and with print, so I am having to learn a lot, but it's fascinating to do that.
