Hi, Joseph, hi Jean Claude.
I've just restored my vintage car's vintage gearbox. What oil do you recommend?
As you can guess, gearboxes differ for modern cars and vintage ones.
Here we have a typical gearbox for a vintage car.
Motul recommends a 75W90 grade upmarket product for a client wanting to take care of his vintage car.
What does 75W140 mean?
It's a viscosity grade. Depending on the gearbox technology either 75W90 or 75W140 products are used.
On a limited slip differential like this one, which has friction plates inside, we'll use a 75W140 viscosity grade.
What's the difference between a mineral oil and a synthetic oil?
The big difference is that mineral oil is a by-product of oil refining whereas synthetic oil is produced by chemical synthesis in a laboratory.
Joseph, what does 75W140 stand for?
On this Gear Competition lubricant, 75W stands for Winter and the cold viscosity rating, whereas 140 is the hot viscosity rating.
Viscosity is a very important factor in protecting an engine.
