Hi, my name is Kenny Saylors. I'm here on Expert Village.com to teach you how to understand
the great game of American football. Next, we're going to talk about special teams. You
have your kicking team, your field goal team, and your punt team. The kicker will come out
when you start the game with a kickoff. The players line up with the kicker in the middle.
The kicker runs and kicks the ball off to the other team to start the game. Also, after
each score, he gets the chance to kick a point after touchdown, often referred to as a PAT.
Whenever a touchdown is scored, it's worth 6 points. They bring out the kicking team
with one player to hold the ball with the kicker behind him. The ball is snapped to
the holder, the kicker runs up, kicks the ball with the purpose of kicking the ball
through the uprights on the goal post. If he kicks successfully, they achieve the PAT,
point after touchdown, which is worth one point. The team will now have 7 points rather
than 6. If they miss that point after touchdown they only have the 6 points, not 7. Another
option they always have is to run another play and get two points, called a two point
conversion. We'll talk about that later. Let's say the team does not quite get enough yardage
to score a touchdown. But they get within 40 yards of the goal line. If they are confident
enough in their kicker they will let their place kicker come out and attempt to make
a field goal. If they make a field goal, it's worth 3 points. I can't tell you how many
times field goals have won games. It's a very important position. The kicker is such a vital
part of the game.
