DEREK MOREL: Well it's an exciting day for the University.
Showing progress to the university community, that we're moving the university forward with some great things.
It really is an opportunity to bring people together.
Coach Maestri is a legacy. He's an icon in our city. Certainly a legacy for our university.
He's a hall of fame-er, in may halls of fame and known throughout not only college baseball,
but obviously throughout our city for all of his work in our community and the City of New Orleans for years.
It really has brought some focus back on our program- not only our program, but our university.
The student-athletes are excited about, certainly, new leadership and they know, they've heard,
from either their fathers or from former players about the legacy of Coach Maestri
and they know what they are dealing with, the know that they can soak up and learn a lot,
not only from Coach but from the young assistants we have. And we have fighters on the team,
kids who care about the university, about wearing New Orleans across their chest.
It's important to them and so far, so good. We're not .500 yet, but we're moving forward.
First game in the Southland Conference is huge monumental day for our program and the chance to play for a championship.
That's all great and it's going to mean a lot to the kids as we get down the line.
