My name is Osamah Hasan, and I'm majoring
in biological sciences and psychology.
My dream is to become a doctor specializing
in global health. I chose UIC
because of its reputation as a state-of-the-art research university.
I always wanted to study abroad, but wasn't
sure if I could afford it. The UIC Office of Special Scholarships helped me win two
study abroad scholarships - one to Indonesia, and one to Botswana.
In class you learn about the shortages of the health care force, shortages of everything.
But just experiencing that firsthand was really profound in Botswana.
I would love to travel and provide health care.
There was also so much beauty and adventure in Botswana. Lion safaris, World Cup soccer
games, and crazy desert races. It was an unforgettable experience.
I'm Julia Kaufman, and I'm a design major.
I grew up on the northwest side of Chicago,
but I love going to school in the heart of the city.
My friends and I like to take advantage of all the different museums and activities that
are happening, and so, we'll go to the Art Institute or we'll go to the Cultural Center
or to free dancing events at Millennium Park. There's always something happening on campus
- I try to represent. I go to Spark in the Park every year, and then almost every week
there are different kinds of lecture series put on by renowned faculty. My design program
is fantastic. That's why I came here. I know I am learning exactly what I need to get a
job after graduation. I work on west campus in the Office of Publications. I'm getting
tons of job experience right on campus.
I'm Rachel Harsley, and I'm a computer science student
here at UIC.
With the resources at UIC, I'm able to use
computer science to make a difference. My first year here, I knew that I was interested
in education, so I decided to team up with the learning technologies group to help third
grade students learn about the orbits of the different planets. They love working on their
iPads. They feel like real scientists, which is our goal, for them to realize that they
can do scientific inquiry and be successful at it.
Chicago is amazing for internships. UIC can help connect you with companies here in Chicago
or all over the country. I've been lucky to land internships at AT&T, Intel, and GE. And
next summer - Google. It's not all about work, though. UIC makes it easy to unwind and have
fun. I play five-on-five pickup games in the rec center every chance I get.
I love to play basketball. I'm right down the street from the Chicago Bulls, so it can't
get any better than that.
