Kwanzaa is based on the year-end
harvest festivals that have taken place throughout Africa for thousands of years.
The name comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," which means
"first fruits of the harvest."
And the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa are based on values from the continent of Africa.
Over the past 35 years, the Annual Kwanzaa Gathering
at the Museum has grown into one of the most engaging and largest events
of its kind.
Hosted by wonderful artists and storytellers, the festivities
will include family-friendly activities
and even an international marketplace.
Kwanzaa at the American Museum of Natural History is a great family event
with incredible music, dance, spoken word and inspiring energy and spirit.
We encourage everyone to come out to enjoy and participate.
