Have you ever seen someone being shouted down and not allowed to speak?
If you see a situation like that, you know it's not right.
As human beings we all want to be treated fairly.
That's what human rights are all about, ensuring that every person
gets the chance to live with fairness, with dignity and with respect.
Human rights make a real impact on helping us to deal in a practical way
with problems that arise. Let's take some everyday examples.
Anyone living in a care home has the right to be taken
to the bathroom when they need to. Any child in the care system
has the right to have their opinion taken into account.
If anyone is disturbed by a threat, they have a right to protection.
People have a right to an education that takes account of their own needs.
Human rights apply to everyone everywhere but they need to be understood,
respected and protected. that's where the Northern Ireland
Human Rights Commission comes in. Our work is dedicated to protecting
the most vulnerable and to helping people stand up for their rights.
When we do our work we refer to the international
human rights agreements that have been committed to by the government.
We work to promote greater understanding and awareness of human rights
and how they can be used to create better quality of life for all.
Every year we tell the government how our rights are being protected in Northern
Ireland and what they need to do to improve.
We have been providing advice to ministers and committees on how a Bill of Rights
can make a difference in Northern Ireland. We support providers of public services
to ensure the services you receive respect your rights.
We investigate human rights issues and can help people who believe
that their human rights have been violated. We can all play a part in creating a society
where every person is treated with dignity and respect.
That's only right. For more information on the NIHRC
