Hi, welcome to the director's commentary for
Aquarium. I'm Steve Willis, the director,
and with me is my very special guest, Marianne.
Marianne: Oh, thank you. Steve: Just to list some of her
job duties on set, she arranged the
plants, she got the fish, Marianne: Scenery, yep fish handler
Steve: Water filtration was a big part of it... Marianne: That was, I would say eighty percent of it, yeah.
Steve: I learned a lot about fish poop.
Marianne: That explains my t-shirt, "Ask me about fish poop."
Steve: Yeah, she's easy to spot, ladies and gentlemen, if you see Marianne in the
street, she's the one
that has a fish slogan on every piece of clothes
and bumper sticker. Marianne: Did you see my socks? I don't know if you saw my socks.
Steve: And socks. Bumper stickers, yeah. Marianne: I'm hooked on fish.
That's what my bumper sticker says. It's just cute, it's fun. You know.
It lightens up my day, puts a smile on my face... Steve: Uh huh. Yeah.
Marianne: I... I did seem to have a lot of responsibilities
on this set, a lot of my friends used to ask, "What does Steve do?"
[laughs] We would joke about that. Steve: Yeah, hired you to do all the work.
Marianne: Yeah he did the hiring and firing. I was fired a couple times. Steve: Well...
Marianne: During the shoot. Steve: I find that keeps people on their toes.
Marianne: It did. Steve: I get the most out of people if they feel like they're not gonna get paid.
Marianne: Yeah, I mean, I put a lot of time and effort into the bubble placement.
Steve: Yeah? Marianne: Man did I move that aerator around.
I eventually decided to keep it tucked away in the back,
because I want the focus to be on the little guys
up front, my buddies. Steve: Do you find this one makes you have to go to the bathroom?
Marianne: A little bit, and I do get that a lot, a lot of, um, people tell me that.
And they do say that they use it when they have to go to the bathroom
and that's kind of a nice compliment to me. Steve: I ended up not using the
footage of them being fed. Marianne: Mhmmm.
Steve: I felt like the bubbles were enough. Marianne: Right, that's enough action.
I hear you. We did lose Sylvia,
Sylvia Plath was my favorite fishy, she did slowly float to the top.
Um, and we had to take that scene out. Steve: Yeah.
That's going to be in the, um, bloopers.
The funny thing about it was she was a blowfish. There's something funny about watching a
blowfish float dead to the surface. Marianne: Well, funny for you, maybe, but
tragic for others. Still hurts.
Steve: Yeah... are you okay? Marianne: Yeah, I mean I have a memorial
set up for her and a memorial fund. Well anyway,
uh, that's basically the nuts and bolts of Aquarium.
Steve: Yeah, thanks for listening, everybody. Marianne: Yeah,
they got the inside scoop. [Steve laughs] There you go.
A little fish humor. Steve: Yeah, I hope you enjoyed
the director's commentary. Marianne: Yeah, and go out there and support your local
fish hatcheries, everybody. Fish are people too. Thank you.
Steve: Fish are people too. Thanks. Marianne: Thanks, guys.
